I thought he translated that gruff, gravelly, growling thing into something quite affecting in M$B, though. I was really impressed with his performance in that film. He doesn't phone those characteristics in every picture. His work in The Bridges of Madison County is wildly romantic for him. Sweet, even.

He's doing the same thing he's been doing for the entirety of his career. Squinty eyes and a deep, brooding growl is the Eastwood staple. I'm not speaking for any nuances though, I haven't seen the majority of his films, but right now he just feels like a more respectable De Niro (the difference being he's doing it for the art and not the paycheck).

Well, I thought Eastwood should've won for Million Dollar Baby back in 2004 instead of the overrated mess that was Jaime Foxx. However, I'm not going to declare him the winner of anything until I've had a chance to see the almost entirely unreleased slate of contenders this year.

I first read a script review for this movie about a year or two ago, and it sounded nothing like this trailer. The review made it sound like a black/coming-of-age comedy about a cranky, racist old fart being annoyed by his goofily stereotypical Asian next door neighbors. This looks like Dirty Harry Redux.
Either there were extensive re-writes after Eastwood picked up the script, or the reviewer was full of crap. However, seeing as the review came from Latino Movie Reviews (generally regarded as one of the most reliable sources on the Internet), it's probably the former.
Either that, or I'm just plain mis-remembering. That's a possibility too. :p

Gran Torino Not Dirty Harry Flick

There have been rumors abound that Clint Eastwood's newest flick Gran Torino is another in the long line of Dirty Harry flicks. This is Hollywood so of course if could be possible that a 119 year old man is still roaming the city streets as a police officer.
Luckily we won't have to see Dirty Harry or his walker chasing after bad guys as Gran Torino is NOT a Dirty Harry flick as debunked by Moviehole - who got a chance to piece through the screenplay.
So what is the flick about? Says the movie site:
There is… a 1972 Grand Torino. The car is the prized possession of the film’s central character (he doesn’t budge when his granddaughter mentions that she’d like the car when pop finally keels over) a senior named Walt, grandfather and local sour-puss. When a local Asian boy named Tao attempts to steal the car, Walt, against the advice of others (largely the local priest), forms his own form of punishment.
Ultimately, Walt sets Tao on the right path – giving him a job (even if it’s just doing things around the house for the old man) and teaching him how to communicate with others (there’s some VERY funny stuff in it where Walt has Tao practice his newly honed-speaking skills on the local Barber). Yes, despite its dramatic moments, this is a comedy – a witty, coming-of-age, buddy comedy (yes, you can have all three) with heart.
Sounds like a lot of fun! He's like Mr. Miaygi but with no karate! Hey! We can combine this movie with Dirty Harry and he can teach tao to shoot things!

I just now got around to watching the trailer. Well, most of it. I had to stop it because it looks so ridiculously awful.

So, word out on the street after the highly selective/V.I.P. screening of Gran Torino, is that Eastwood will be a shoo-in for his performance.

If this was anybody but Eastwood, I'd think we were looking at the problematic revenge fantasy of the year. Instead, maybe we're looking at another Oscar.
