DiCaprio's handlers were afraid he'd cancel himself out of the running for best actor with competing films so they advertised him as supporting for The Departed in which he was really the lead. But, yes, he should have been nominated for that, not Blood Diamond.
I believe Spain submitted a film other than Volver.
I don't know what happened with Children of Men. There was some thought that it would have done better if it had opened earlier, but it opened months earlier in London and that didn't help it with the BAFTAs.

My memory is a little vague about this specific year, mainly cause I was working the hardest in my whole life (actually, as I posted at the time, this was the first AA I didn't watch live). But here are some random thoughts:
- How come DiCaprio's placing for The Departed was an issue to discuss. He's obviously the main character (along with Damon). The precursors didn't help him: He was placed in supporting at the SAG's (with no room for Nicholson or Whalberg) and he even won a Satellite Award as supporting (was this prior or after the AA? I'm not sure). I like him, and a lot, in Blood Diamonds, specially for his work with the accent and the "parents remembered" scene... However, I would have been happy had he been nominated for The Departed IN the leading category...
- Pan's Labyrinth should have won specifically the three awards it lost. I loved the screenplay (way better than the overpraised Sunshine), the score (way way better than Babel's) and the film itself. I'm sorry, I liked it better han The Lives of Others, a film I really enjoyed and respect, but Pan is one of my best experiences watchig a film I didn't know what to expect from it...
- Why, I mean, how come, how... How come Volver was not nominated for best foreign language film? Was there a feeling in the air Almodovar has been recognized too many times before...?
- How come the most elaborated costumes win over the "best"? Is that a trend nowdays? Dreamgirls and Curse of the Golden Flower, specially the latter, would have been better choices...
- Now that I've seen Venus all I can say is Peter O'Toole should have won. Period...
- Eddie Murphy was good, but not as great as everyone was saying... Actually, the film itself created too much hype, when I finally saw it, I was actually expecting more... An Inconvenient Truth fits this patters. Nice interesting film, but not the best thing since bread came sliced! It's a filmed conference for christ sake!
- Children of Men deserved more attention... No doubt about it.
- I'm torned between The Danish Poet and The Little Matchgirl, but my feelings, in the end, lean towards the latter.
- If there's a rank based on votes, probably Cruz got 2nd after Mirren. Man, I was shocked by her...
The Departed is one of the best Best Picture winners ever. It was better than I expected, nicely done little film, that relies on a smart script, accurate performances, perfect timing/narrative style and a great directorial work. Nicholson could have been nominated...
