You're right, Sabin. Caine's performance in The Cider House Rules is lovely. If you've ever read the book, he totally nailed that character. I just found Osment's performance to be on a different level entirely. There was something really organic and genuine about it. He ought to have been nominated in the lead category for this performance in A.I. the following year.
I'd really like John Irving to have a hand in adapting "Until I Find You" to the big screen. That book would make a fantastic film with all the tattooing culture stuff, the foray into the world of the Oscars, the crazy cast of supporting characters. It also seemed like the closest he's gotten to Garp in years.

Michael Caine's performance in 'The Cider House Rules' is a sweet piece of work that grows on you. I wouldn't rank him above Law or Osment at all and there are so many other performances that are worthy of nominations as have already been mentioned. However, his Oscar speech is completely wonderful, one of the best that I've seen.

Classiest (and most humble) Oscar speech I've seen, hands down. He made it all about honoring the other nominees. Haley Joel Osment really should've been the winner that year and John Malkovich and Christopher Plummer should've been nominated (I mean, Michael Clarke Duncan? What was that about?).

1999 was an embarrassment of riches for supporting actors. I hate that there's no room on my ballot for Charles S. Dutton (Cookie's Fortune), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Magnolia and/or The Talented Mr. Ripley), Spike Jonze (Three Kings), Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley), William H. Macy (Magnolia and/or Happy, Texas), Ian Hart (The End of the Affair), or Tom Cruise (Magnolia).
Other honorable mentions: Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules), Liev Schreiber (A Walk on the Moon), Max Von Sydow (Snow Falling on Cedars), Alec Baldwin (Outside Providence), Jeremy Northam (The Winslow Boy), and Terrence Howard (The Best Man)
