Even with the expected dominance of more recent comedies, its staggering that in a list of 100 films Some Like It Hot didn't feature... I remember that it was number 1 in a British poll of the greatest funny movies a few years back...

No, it's not. Dr. Strangelove made the list and that's in 1964.
That's why I said "that I spotted". Besides, one film before 1970 isn't much of an improvement and still doesn't invalidate my point.

At least the great Office Space made the list, and Waiting for Guffman--the funniest film in years, we thought--is so far down the list as to almost not make it. Caddyshack? Funny? Silly, maybe.

Wow...I thought AFI was bad but this list makes me cringe. The oldest film on the list (that i spoted) was M*A*S*H in 1970...apparently, comedy didn't exist before then. These people have never seen It Happened One Night or anything by Chaplin or the other early comedians...hell, I'm surprised they didn't include the three stooges or marx brothers.
