RIP Peter Morris - Pioneering Canadian film scholar

PETER MORRIS Professor Emeritus in Film Studies in the Department of Film and Video, York University and a pioneer of Film Studies passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 after a brief but intense battle with cancer. Beloved husband and soul mate of Louise Dompierre to whom he was married for over thirty years and much loved father of Kirsten (Dave), Simon (Maria) and Jonathan (Lillian). He was also the proud and loving grandfather of Tristan, Gabriel, Kenta, Emika, Alexander and Adrianna. In England, Peter leaves behind his sister Joan, his niece Pauline and grand nieces. Peter was born in Blackpool, England and is a graduate of the University of Nottingham and the University of British Columbia. As author and professor Peter will be remembered for his commitment to the development of Film Studies in Canada. A passionate and dedicated teacher, he was the author of 'Embattled Shadows: A History of Canadian Cinema 1885-1939' and 'The Film Companion', and editor and translator of Georges Sadoul's 'Dictionary of Films and Dictionary of Film Makers'. He has also published numerous articles and monographs on Canadian and International films. His most recent book is 'David Cronenberg: A Delicate Balance'. Prior to teaching at York University, Peter taught Film Studies at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. He was founding curator of the Canadian Film Archives in Ottawa, former editor of the Canadian Journal of Film Studies and a member of the advisory editorial board. He also served as coordinator of the Fine Arts Cultural Studies programme at York University. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peter Morris Scholarship Fund in Film Studies, Department of Film Studies, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. A Memorial Reception for family, friends and colleagues will be held at the Hamilton Club, 6 Main Street East, Hamilton, Ontario, on Saturday, February 12, 2011 from 2-5 p.m. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Marlatt Funeral Home, Dundas.
