I totally forgot to post my picks here :o

But why did she have to "pull off"?
She didn’t “have to”.
I think that was more a “how could such a thing happen?” statement than a “why did she have to…?”.
Thank you, yes!! A total headscratcher, as was Laura Dern in Wild.

She didn’t “have to”. It’s an out of the box nomination, usually a cottail, for limited screen time roles that sometimes show up in the list. Marina de Tavira, Laura Dern in Wild are the most recent examples that I can think off.

You aren't convinced about Amour or Drive My Car? Interesting.

J. Edgar anyone? Though whether that's a reference to DiCaprio or Domingo (biopic getting the American TV trio before missing out) is up to you.
I wondered if my brain eliding the J.Edgar year was a case where, despite Leo getting the SAG nomination, I never took him remotely seriously. I went digging through our archives to see if I'd had him among my predictions/alternates -- and found I didn't post predictions at all that year. It was during the peak period of my wife's illness, so possibly I just didn't have the time or energy.
Okri wrote: Mon Jan 22, 2024 9:29 pm Not a prediction, but a comment. If Past Lives, The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall get nominated for best picture, AMPAS would have doubled the number of non-English language films nominated for best picture in about 15 years. Prior to the expansion, 9 non-English films were nominated (and that's including Babel and Letters from Iwo Jima. Since the expansion, we've seen Amour, Roma, Parasite, Minari, Drive My Car and All Quiet on the Western Front do so. Rather exciting.
Roma and Parasite, from that list, we can assume would have been nominated even without the expansion; possibly Minari and All Quiet, as well.

You may have to assemble a tribunal, however, to officially declare Past Lives a non-English language film, as an extraordinary number of people seem to be remembering it as mostly in English, given where they've placed or not placed it on year-end awards slates. I'm not even sure there's less English-language dialogue in Anatomy of a Fall than in Past Lives, but most onliners will laugh at you if you make that suggestion.

Re: Final Oscar Predictions

Post by Mister Tee »

Salient overall fact: it's a super-competitive year, and nearly every category could trade in the top two runners-up without significantly diminishing quality.

Other comments as warranted sprinkled throughout.

1. Best Film
American Fiction
Anatomy of a Fall
Barbie
The Holdovers
Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
alts.: All of Us Strangers, The Color Purple

If the top ten is in any way wrong, the entire Oscar universe will be surprised.

2. Best Actor
Bradley Cooper (Maestro)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers of the Flower Moon)
Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers)
Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer)
Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction)
alts.: Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers), Colman Domingo (Rustin)

I can’t shake the feeling of Domingo weakness, despite his universal TV-precursor showing. And Leo hasn’t missed a nomination since The Departed, where he had category confusion. Would love to predict Scott, and will be delighted if he makes it, but tough to justify.

3. Best Actress
Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon)
Sandra Huller (Anatomy of a Fall)
Greta Lee (Past Lives)
Carey Mulligan (Maestro)
Emma Stone I(Poor Things)
alts.: Margot Robbie (Barbie), Annette Bening (Nyad)

Most are going Robbie instead of Lee, but I’m willing to go down with that ship. If Ellis-Taylor actually makes it in, I’m giving over my predictions chart to Frances Fisher.

4. Best Supporting Actor
Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon)
Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer)
Ryan Gosling (Barbie)
Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things)
Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers)
alts.: Charles Melton (May December), Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction)

Double Poor Things is the conventional choice, and could be correct. (Lots are citing the recent run of doubles in this category -- showing no memory of the quarter-century prior, where there were none such.) But it seems iffy, when a film’s done so spottily in this category at SAG/BAFTA, to predict over-performance. Lots of potential for odd outcomes, here.

5. Best Supporting Actress
Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer)
Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple)
Penelope Cruz (Ferrari)
Jodie Foster (Nyad)
Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)
alts.: Claire Foy (All of Us Strangers), Sandra Huller (The Zone of Interest), Julianne Moore (May December), Rosamund Pike (Saltburn)

A near-infinitude of possibilities here. I’d love to predict Foy, but I’m already going against my rules to squeeze Brooks in, and it’s hard to imagine two exceptions. Huller is the one I’m blind on, as Zone is my biggest remaining haven’t-seen. Is she truly that good in the film, or is this an outsized hug for her big overall year? If the latter, I’d rather see the wealth spread, in a category of such diverse candidates.

6. Best Director
Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon)
Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer)
Celine Song (Past Lives)
Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things)
Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest )
alts.: Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall), Greta Gerwig (Barbie), Alexander Payne (The Holdovers)

My toughest category, bar none. Any one of my alts could easily slip in. (I’m kind of resigned to a 2- or 3- of 5 for my guesses.) If Scorsese is omitted -- a realer possibility than most want to acknowledge -- it’d be his first miss when he was a true contender since The Age of Innocence.

7. Best Adapted Screenplay
American Fiction
Barbie
Killers of the Flower Moon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
alts.: The Zone of Interest, All of Us Strangers, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret

This is like adapted in 2015: too many must-have candidates for only 5 slots. That year, Globe winner Steve Jobs was the surprise omittee. Here, I made my final elimination (Zone) at the very last second, and it’s every bit as likely to show up, with every single predicted nominee possible as the one bounced.

8. Best Original Screenplay
Anatomy of a Fall
The Holdovers
Maestro
May December
Past Lives
alts.: Saltburn, Air, Asteroid City

Not even worth discussion.

9. Best Cinematography
Killers of the Flower Moon (Rodrigo Prieto)
Maestro (Matthew Libatique)
Oppenheimer (Hoyte van Hoytema)
Poor Things (Robbie Ryan)
The Zone of Interest (Łukasz Żal)
alts.: El Conde (Edward Lachman), Saltburn (Linus Sandgren)

ASC’s El Conde is neck-and-neck, but I’m thinking the branch could have its black-and-white jones satisfied by the segments of Maestro and Poor Things.

10. Best Costume Design
Barbie
Killers of the Flower Moon
Napoleon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
alts.: Wonka, The Color Purple

11. Best Production Design
Barbie
Killers of the Flower Moon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
alts.: Asteroid City, Wonka, Napoleon

12. Best Sound Mixing
Barbie
Ferrari
Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
alts.: The Zone of Interest, The Killer, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One

13. Best Film Editing
Anatomy of a Fall
Barbie
Killers of the Flower Moon
Oppenheimer
The Zone of Interest
alts.: Poor Things, Maestro, The Holdovers

14. Best Score
The Boy and the Heron
Killers of the Flower Moon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
alts.: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Barbie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

If these bozos actually waste another slot on same-score-one-more-time John Williams, I’ll shout at my screen. Diane Warren isn’t as pampered as this guy.

15. Best Visual Effects
The Creator
Godzilla Minus One
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Society of the Snow
alts.: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

16. Best Make-up
Golda
Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
alts.: Beau Is Afraid, Ferrari

17. Best Song
“The Fire Inside” (Flamin’ Hot)
“I’m Just Ken” (Barbie)
“Quiet Eyes” (Past Lives)
“Road to Freedom” (Rustin)
“What Was I Made For?” (Barbie)
alts.: “It Never Went Away” (American Symphony), “Am I Dreaming” (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse)

The Barbie duo (either of which could win), Lenny Kravitz, the inevitable Diane Warren, and something from a best picture nominee.

18. Best Foreign Language Film
20 Days in Mariupol (Ukraine)
Society of the Snow (Spain)
The Taste of Things (France)
The Teachers’ Lounge (Germany)
The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom)
alts.: Fallen Leaves (Finland), Perfect Days (Japan)

Though it would be kind of hilarious if The Taste of Things were left out, while Anatomy of a Fall kicked butt in the main categories.

19. Best Animated Feature
The Boy and the Heron
Elemental
Nimona
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
alts.: Robot Dreams, Suzume

20. Best Documentary Feature
20 Days in Mariupol
American Symphony
Bobi Wine: The People’s President
Four Daughters
Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project
alts.: Beyond Utopia, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy

Truly blind picking, for the most part. I’m hoping for the Midnight Cowboy doc, if only because I’ve seen it, and it’d be one less movie to cram in.
