Like many NY theatre-adjacent folk, my main awareness of Joanna Merlin is in her capacity as casting director for many Broadway shows, especially the Prince/Sondheim musicals.

As it happens, one of my last never-seen-it/rent-it-before-Netflix-discs-shuts-down choices was Mystic Pizza, where she shows she could very well have stayed as full-time actress. Bon voyage, lady.

With a screen career that began with 1956's The Ten Commandments, who was later Broadway's original Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof and more recently a longtime Law & Order judge, Joanna Merlin has died at 92.
