R.I.P. Irene Cara

Whether they are behind the camera or in front of it, this is the place to discuss all filmmakers regardless of their role in the filmmaking process.

I think she came along at the wrong time. She would have been a brilliant disco star and those songs certainly have that feel to them. Disco was already fading into obscurity and icons like Donna Summer and The Bee Gees were disappearing with it. It's unfortunate because both of those songs are key part of my 80s identity as they marked the pinnacle of an era of big songs winning Oscars, a golden age of motion picture songs. I don't remember her much as an actor, but as a singer, she was a great singer who peaked too soon.

After Fame and the mega-hit Flashdance song I thought she would be an enduring star, but that obviously didn’t happen. She will long be remembered for those two cultural touchstones, however. I first took notice of her in Sparkle, a not-very-good film with a terrific soundtrack composed by Curtis Mayfield and sung by Aretha Franklin. Irene had a sensitive, relatable screen presence and a beautiful voice that could soar, perhaps best exemplified by “Out Here On My Own” from the Fame soundtrack.

Rest in Peace, Irene.

R.I.P. Irene Cara

She won the Oscar just a few weeks after her 25th birthday. At the time I'm sure she was one of the youngest non-acting Oscar winners, and probably is still somewhere on that list, although I can't find an actual list through quick googling. (Wikipedia logs age superlatives in acting and directing but nowhere else.) But at a minimum, Adele, Sam Smith, H.E.R., Billie Eilish, and Finneas O'Connell have all jumped her in the past decade.

Irene Cara, 'Fame' and 'Flashdance... What a Feeling' Singer, Dead at 63

Irene Cara, the iconic ’80s singer-actress best known for the soundtrack smashes “Fame” and “Flashdance… What a Feeling,” has died. She was 63.

“It is with profound sadness that on behalf of he family I announce the passing of Irene Cara,” the singer’s spokesperson said in a statement early Saturday. “The Academy Award-winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer passed away in her Florida home. Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available.

“Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief,” the rep added. “She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films. Funeral services are pending and a memorial for her fans will be planned at a future date.”

In addition to singing the title sing for 1980’s Fame, Cara also starred in the film as Coco Hernandez.

“Flashdance… What a Feeling”, which Cara co-wrote with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey for 1983’s Flashdance, earned Cara an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1983.

“This is the absolute worst part of being a publicist,” her rep lamented on Twitter early Saturday before sharing the aforementioned statement. “I can’t believe I’ve had to write this, let alone release the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I’ll be reading each and every one of them and know she’ll be smiling from Heaven. She adored her fans.”
