R.I.P Bruce Jay Friedman

Tough season for NY theatre.
Friedman has film connections -- Oscar nomination for his part in the Splash screenplay; The Heartbreak Kid was based on a story of his. But I think of him as novelist and theatre guy: his plays Scuba Duba and Steambath were off-Broadway hits of my formative years. He was part of that generation of Jewish comic writers that emerged from the 50s-through-70s -- including Philip Roth, Isaac Bashevis Singer, etc. -- and created an entire literary niche.
