She was both one of a kind and the last of a breed.

I never realized it, but apparently I first read her in the New York Journal-American that my father used to bring home in the 1950s and early 1960s when she anonymously wrote the Cholly Knickerbocker column.

She worked in a disreputable field, but, unlike many compatriots, she never seemed to be trying to be mean -- while others took pleasure in it.

And she devoted a column to Nine, featuring my wife, shortly after it opened, and sent a copy along with a nice note, both of which hang on the wall of our apartment.
