First off, let's replace Caleb Deshenal's pretty , albeit unnatural lighting of Robert Redford and Glenn Close in The Natural with Tonio Delli Colli's stunning camerawork in Once Upon a Time in America.

Then let's replace Vilmos Zsigmond's pretty farm country disaster, The River with Nestor Almendros' more finely honed Places in the Heart.

Then we can throw out Miroslav Ondricek's intricate lighting of Amadeus for John Alcott's majestic Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes.

Now, we can decide between Ernest Day's classy cinematography for David Lean's swan song, A Passage to India and Oscar winner Chris Menges' powerful trek across Roland Joffé's The Killing Fields.

I agree with AMPAS on this one. The Killing Fields was the right choice.
