From EW:

The Academy has invited eleven celebrities from disparate industries to introduce this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees.

The eight contenders vying for the Academy’s highest competitive honor will receive introductions from entertainers like Barbra Streisand, Dana Carvey, Queen Latifah, Diego Luna, Tom Morello, Amandla Stenberg, Trevor Noah, and Mike Myers, while tennis pro Serena Williams, Congressman John Lewis — who played a role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington — and world-renowned Spanish-American chef José Andrés are set to speak about the nominated titles as well.

An Academy press release did not indicate which films the celebrities will introduce, though a recent New York Times report indicated Williams would appear in honor of A Star is Born (Streisand also won her second Academy Award for writing the original tune “Evergreen” from the 1976 version of the oft-retold Hollywood romance, so it seems likely she’ll partner with Williams for that film’s introduction).

I did see something about having major stars appear as segment hosts, so if they're doing that she would certainly be a good choice for one of them, but I doubt after all the brouhaha they would have a host for the whole thing. With Queen opening the show, they could bring her out next to do a monologue dressed as Queen Anne.

Another bad idea as reported by the New York Times via Entertainment Weekly:

Serena Williams may not have anything to do with this year’s crop of Oscar nominees but the world-famous tennis player will have an important role in next Sunday’s Academy Awards.

As The New York Times reports, Williams — along with seven other people from “outside the world of entertainment” — will introduce the Best Picture nominees and talk about how the films impacted their lives. Williams has apparently been booked to wax on about A Star Is Born.

“Along with inclusion, which we definitely want to embrace, the big theme of the show is about movies connecting us — not in this theater but in a big, sweeping, cultural way,” Donna Gigliotti, the lead producer of the 91st Academy Awards, told the NYT. “There are so many things to balance. Some viewers want to see glamour. You have to pay attention to where there is humor and where there is music. When do we guess that people at home might get up to make popcorn in the kitchen, and what can we have on right after that to bring them back?”

Queen had been asked to open the Oscars, but turned the request down. This looks like they're back on as the opening act since the Instagram clip shoust Feb 24 5pm which is when they start in L.A.

Here's the reason behind the nonsense:

"ABC, who is presenting the Oscars (and is owned by Disney), has a sneak preview of a new series, Whiskey Cavalier, planned for after the show. That would be start time of no sooner than 11pm EST on a Sunday night."

Wonder what time that would be starting, or what other things ABC/Disney would have wanted to get rid of, had the "Popular Movie" Oscar been added to the show's running time.

Well... the whole show production has been a continuous joke all the way. Has this been a strategy to be constantly on the news?

Mister Tee wrote: From the beginning of the Tony broadcast (in 1967), all categories were given on air. To be fair, there were fewer tech categories then: scenery/costumes/lighting were single prizes honoring both plays and musicals until 2005, and sound/orchestration awards were also late add-ons. But right from the start, there were network people agitating to get rid of those "boring" categories.

As the ratings for the show dwindled over the course of the 90s, these calls became louder. Finally, Rosie O'Donnell -- when she was the Tonys' biggest booster via her morning show -- came up with a decent compromise: air all the tech prizes (directors/choreographer/score/libretto included) in the 8-9PM ET hour on PBS (so those interested could watch) and present the remainder in the 9-11 network slot. Which worked fine, but wasn't good enough for TV, since what they really wanted was to get rid of those boring awards and make the show into a giant commercial for elaborate musicals (if they'd thought they could have got away with eliminating best play, I'm sure they'd have tried). They finally muscled the board into killing the PBS hour, extending the show to three hours, but still showing only the "glamour" awards, allowing lots more time for bus-and-truck companies of Jersey Boys to be spotlighted year after year. This is what the Oscars will turn into if the creatives aren't vigilant.

(The Grammys, by the way, are another cautionary tale. From what I saw the other night, the Grammys are now a 3 1/2 hour concert, interrupted once or twice an hour by an award presentation.)
Fascinating. Does anyone know the history on the Emmys? I know that the Emmys, as far as I can remember, has ALWAYS had the tech awards separate because of the numerous categories they always had. They have even MORE categories now because of all online/streaming content, so much so that they give out awards over the course of THREE nights. Two for the technical and the various other awards they have and the regular Emmy night that's aired on TV.

I got the email notification as well, though it was sometime after the fact. Maybe something was locked that got unlocked. Whatever it was, thanks for working on it and (apparently) fixing it.
