I'm sure you meant The Last Samurai.

You'd really have nominated Laura Linney for that awful peformance? Her accent was horrendous and she didn't sell that last scene in the bedroom at all. Frankly, I'd have given her a Razzie nomination for dragging that movie down in the finale. Marcia Gay Harden was the only female supporting role that should've been awarded. Very strong performance.

Re-posted and edited slightly from the 2003 forum.

Best Film--

4) Elephant (Gus Van Sant)
5) Mystic River (Clint Eastwood)

Still haven't seen a lot of the contenders here; Actually haven't seen Return of the King (never got a chance to see it in theaters, and haven't rented it yet either; really wanted to see the extended version of The Two Towers first), but I did like the costumes on the first two a lot.

Best Picture

Big Fish
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Lost in Translation

Mystic River
Open Range

Best Director

Sophia Coppola, Lost in Translation
Kevin Costner, Open Range
Clint Eastwood, Mystic River
Peter Jackson,
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Fernando Mereilles, City of God

[Unlike the Academy, Criddic has nominated Penny Marshall, Jodie Foster, and Jane Campion as directing nominees before Coppola. Jackson added a third directing nod for his epic trilogy. Costner got his second nomination for directing a Western (he had lost his Dances With Wolves nod to Martin Scorsese in 1990.) It was Mereilles' debut nod. Yet Unforgiven victor Eastwood had his day.]

Best Actor

Russell Crowe,
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Johnny Depp,
Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Robert Duvall, Open Range
Bill Murray, Lost in Translation
Sean Penn, Mystic River

[This marked Crowe's fifth nomination since 1997. He won back-to-back in 2000 and 2001. Depp and Penn were each on their third nods (the former won for 1994's Ed Wood and the latter in 1999 for Sweet and Lowdown). Duvall is on his first. Still, Murray's long-overdue nod for his terrific work gave him the win.]

Best Actress

Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider
Jamie Lee Curtis, Freaky Friday
Scarlett Johannson, Lost in Translation
Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give
Charlize Theron, Monster

[1996 nominee Keaton (for Marvin's Room) had the last laugh over heavy favorite Theron and a category of first-time nominees.]

Best Supporting Actor

Alec Baldwin, The Cooler
Kevin Costner, Open Range
Tim Robbins, Mystic River
Peter Sarsgaard, Shattered Glass
Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai

[Costner was given three previous acting nods, all in leads, and won for 1993's A Perfect World. Robbins had won a screenplay award for Dead Man Walking and won over relative newcomers Sarsgaard, Watanabe and first-timer Baldwin.]

Best Supporting Actress

Shoreh Aghdashloo, House of Sand and Fog
Annette Bening, Open Range
Marcia Gay Harden, Mystic River
Holly Hunter, Thirteen
Christina Ricci, Monster
