Even though Edward Zwick alrady has an Oscar for producing Shakespeare in Love (plus another nomination for Best Picture - Traffic), none of his directed films has ever managed to grab a Best Picture nod. However, some of those films have actually taken a lot of nods and eventual wins, some of them quite unexpected (Glory, Blood Diamonds, Legends of the Fall, The Last Samurai). He's good directing actors: four guys have achieved nods for their performances in his films and Washington even won... Three of those four films were nominated for Cinematography and all of them for Sound.

So... what could ever happened if Zwick finds the appealing material of a WWII-oriented film?

"Defiance" is precisely that. It opens December 19 2008 (curious date, huh? Perfect for awards? campaign?)... It stars Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, and Jamie Bell and according to Wikipedia it is about three Jewish brothers from West Belarus who escape the Nazis and fight back to rescue fellow Jews. They create some kind of a rural town or village in a forest where the three brothers hide Jews saving them from the Nazi regimen.

Eduardo Serra (The Girl with the Pearl Earring, The Wings of the Dove) is in charge of the Cinematography, James Newton Howard will do the score. Steven Rosenblum (Braveheart, Glory, Blood Diamond) is the Editor and Jenny Beavan (OscarGuy, some time ago you asked for her... actually for her association with John Bright) is the costume designer.

So, let's see what will happen come Oscar time...
