Mychael Danna's 'Exotica' score is fantastic. I'm more than willing to listen to Williams' 'Nixon' score again but Danna's work with Egoyan is pretty unparalleled.

Dammit...Nixon is an excellent score. Maybe not as good as Williams's nominated score the following year (for Sleepers), but it definitely deserves a re-listen. If I remember, I'll stage a rescue when my turn comes again. Or I may just put The Bridges of Madison County in, which is another excellent score that was overlooked.

I don't think the number of Groups is the real problem. The problem is how long it takes until it's our turn again. For example if the whole game continued like it did today with 5 people 'voting' within 24 hours (and with Penelope also expected to 'vote' within the day), it wouldn't bother us so much the fact that we have to make choices in the 'lesser' categories and not always in the 'big' ones.

However if you still insist that we should limit the categories, i think that in addition to the 2 groups that you mention, there should be a 3rd one with Music, Editing, Art Direction and Costumes and thus excluding Make up, Sound, Sound Effects, Visual Effects. My opinion however is that we should stick to the current 3 groups and just get quicker. Maybe even skip someone if he/she doesn't respond in 24 hours.

Then it would have to be:

Group 1 - Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, Writing, Editing

Group 2 - Director, Actress, Supporting Actor, Music, Cinematography

For the next year we might consider rearranging groups 1 and 2 as follows:

Group 1 - Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Writing, Editing

Group 2 - Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Music, Cinematography

Since everyone gravitiates toward the big awards anyway, it might be more gratifying to vote for picture and director in tandem, or with the acting awards move someone between categories on the same play.

are you serious? goddamn! i misread!

let me retract my sound effects nod...'Heat' certainly is a stronger piece of created sound assembly than 'Batman Forever'...

Shoot, I can't re-replace 'Sense and Sensibility' with 'A Little Princess', can I?

They already are, Sabin.

It's:

Group 1 (Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Director)

Group 2 (Writing, Music, Film Editing, Cinematography)

Group 3 (Art Direction, Costumes, Makeup, Sound, Sound Effects, Visual Effects)

So that's it for Best Picture? No more?

BEST PICTURE
Babe
Before Sunrise
The Bridges of Madison County
Dead Man Walking
Leaving Las Vegas

...I would've hoped that Wild Reeds, Se7en, Exotica, or Toy Story would've made it in but this would have to go down as one of the best lineups in history. All of them tell character-driven human stories. Even 'Babe'.

Jeez, I don't know who to bump for Jennifer Jason Leigh in 'Georgia' now that Sharon Stone is gone.

For Best Supporting Actress, I'll replace Kathleen Quinlan ('Apollo 13') with Elodie Bouchez ('Wild Reeds').

For Best Dramatic Score, I'll replace John Williams ('Nixon') with Mychael Danna ('Exotica').

Best Sound Effects, I'll replace 'Batman Forever' with 'Heat'.

...is there ANY FUCKING WAY we can lump Art Direction & Costume Design in with the Makeup/Sound Mixing/Sound Effects/Visual Effects crowd? For the next round?

The Bridges of Madison County, since we were talking about it earlier. Watch for the wonderful set of clips towards the end after Eastwood's speech.

I suppose that neither 'Underground' nor 'Ulysses' Gaze' are eligible since they premiered in U.S.A. the following years.

So,

Group I:
Toni Collette 'Muriel's Wedding' replaces Sharon Stone 'Casino' in the Best Actress category

Group II:
'Wild Reeds' replaces 'Mighty Aphrodite' in the Orginal Screenplay category

Group III:
'Sense and Sensibility' is preserved in the Best Costume Design category

And Best Picture has been locked. It's never surprising that one of the Top 6 categories is being filled so soon, but there are plenty of others still to modify.

It's one rescue per player per year, but you still have to knock off one of the original nominees to rescue the score.
