Re: Ten Best Films of the 1990s

Post by Bog »

I was just sauntering through old posts and came across these 10 best threads. Then I scrolled down a while and lo and behold found my uber embarrassing 19 year old self attempting to express a top 10. Honestly, not everything changed...but basically

1) Unforgiven (Eastwood)
2) Close Up (Kiarostami)
3) Fargo (Coen)
4) Taste of Cherry (Kiarostami)
5) The Thin Red Line (Malick)
6) Chungking Express (Wong)
7) Blue (Kieslowski)
'8) Jackie Brown (Tarantino)
9) Crash (Cronenberg)
10) The Sweet Hereafter (Egoyan)

I can't stand leaving off The Iron Giant or the rest of the Eastwood decade (A Perfect World, White Hunter Black Heart, Bridges), but I did my best to stick to 10. Also The Ice Storm deserves to be here...last second judgment call behind Egoyan...and I won't lie Exotica likely played a part. Finally a few more: Rushmore, Fire Walk With Me, Breaking the Waves, Groundhog Day, and Bitter Moon would very possibly round out a top 20...extremely fun if not pull your hair out exercise. Damien induced guilty pleasure absolutely equals Office Space?..

It's a sneaky way for me to list more movies. :)

Seriously though, I need to see more of them. I have seen a fair number of foreign titles from this time period, but there are many I haven't seen.

Also, I don't know which ones would place in an overall top ten over the American films which are in the main list. I suppose Cyrano could replace Lambs, but what point would there be in that?

Is there a reason that foreign films are separate from English-language? It seems unecessary.
