Amazingly, the Chicago Critics' nominations proved the most prescient of all in the acting categories, giving nominations to 17 of the 20 furute Oscar nominees.

They agreed with all five Best Actors, and four out of five of the nominees for Best Actress while moving the fifth to Supporting Actress. They agreed with four of the five for Supporting Actor and three of the other four nominees for Supporting Actress.

They were the only group I could find to nominate both de Armis and Riseborough for Best Actress. In moving Williams to support, they gave the fifth slot with Mia Goth, not any of the perceived Oscar frontrunners.

Mark Rylance was their fifth choice for Supporting Actor, not Judd Hirsch.

With Williams getting the fourth Supporting Actress slot, they gave the fifth to Janelle Monae over both Bassett and Curtis.

No Danielle Deadwyler as Chicago's own Mrs. Till in Best Actress from the Chicago Critics is shocking, but at least they covered her in Most Promising Performer.

Nice to see Top Gun: Maverick limited to Cinematography, although Tee may think even that is too much :? .

Initial thoughts:

Best Actress is the biggest surprise. I expected Danielle Deadwyler to have a much stronger showing with the critics groups than she has up to this point. On the flip side, Ana de Armas is having an unexpectedly good day.

I think there's a strong chance their Best Actor lineup carries over to the Oscars.

Kudos to them for placing Michelle Williams in support. Having seen the film recently, I'm puzzled by her going lead.

Women Talking continues to underperform with acting nominations.

Weak showing for Avatar: The Way of Water but Chicago was cold to Cameron the first time around, as well, in 2009.
