Thanks for the catch. Replaced his second mention with Olivier in The Entertainer.

I was under the impression that this was released in 1958.

I love Kerr in The Sundowners, it's a fantastic, sexy, ahead-of-it's-time performance.

Garson, who I just had the displeasure of revisiting two weeks or so ago, is a horrifying nightmare. That film has not aged well and her performance is beyond hokey.

And yes, Simmons deserved a nomination for Gantry...

Allmusic.com lists 175 currently available recordings of the title song from Never on Sunday. There were many more versions that are no longer available.

Composer Manos Hadjidakis' recording, which I believe was an instrumental, was an international smash hit so it would have been hard to ignore. As was then customary, the film was dubbed in English, but the singing of the title song was not. Nevertheless it was a popular catchy tune that, as I said, would have been hard to ignore. Still, it was precedent setting in that it was the first song in a foreign language to be nominated and win the Oscar. The win, I believe, was a surprise. If memory serves, Bing Crosby's The Second Time Around from High Time was the favorite that year.

I believe Connie Francis, who sang it at the Oscars, sang it in both the original Greek and in its English translation as did Andy Williams. I believe Connie's hit came after the Oscars. I know Andy's came a year later.

Big Magilla wrote:I would think Deborah Kerr on her sixth nomination, in a performance for which she won her third New York Film Critics Award, would have been favored to win had Liz not pulled her stunt.

Ironically, though, her New York win came on the third ballot. Melina Mercouri had led on the first ballot, closely followed by Greer Garson. On the final ballot, Kerr won by a simple majority over Mercouri, Garson, MacLaine, Hiller, Hayley Mills (Pollyanna), Luana Patton (Home From the Hill) and Simmons.

First off - Could somebody explain how Never on Sunday managed to win the best song Oscar when the words were in Greek? Did the English version come out the same year or much later?

Good to know that Mercouri was a close second to Kerr in the final ballot. So her performance WAS taken seriously by critics. I agree that if Liz had not won the award it would have gone to Kerr (one of those career / compensation wins). Next in line would have been MacLaine.

Coming to Kerr, her 6 nods and no win. I think she deserved 4 of her nods -I'm not particularly fond of her alcoholic wife in Edward, My Son (1949) or the whiny ninny she plays in Separate Tables (1958) - but none of these performances was great enough to triumph against her competition. Her best performance remains Black Narcisuss (1947), for which she should have been nominated and won. I am also very partial to one of her last screen performances in The Assam Garden (1985).

A movie about unfulfilled lives of sheep herders set against rural, sprawling landscape, directed tastefully but in a non flamboyant fashion by a rather guarded filmmaker – what was in it for Damien to be enthusiastic about?

There is a moment in The Sundowners, when Deborah Kerr sees a well bread young woman in a the window of a first class of a train, and all the history of the character she’s playing, which we’re not told about in the movie, is written on her face. One of my favorite bits of acting ever. A truly remarkable performance.

And I’ve argued this before, but Wendy Hiller was a lead in Sons and Lovers. The relationship between her and Stockwell is what the movie is about. Her role is bigger and every bit as central to the plot as that of MacLaine’s was in The Apartment. Ok, MacLaine was the romantic and sexual interest of the male protagonist (hell, so was Hiller, but we wont go there), but she was the Rachel Weisz of her movie. In these day and age she’d be probably nominated (and win) in the supporting category.

I love whoever voted for Luana Patton (was Eugene Archer voting then?).
