I would think Deborah Kerr on her sixth nomination, in a performance for which she won her third New York Film Critics Award, would have been favored to win had Liz not pulled her stunt.

Ironically, though, her New York win came on the third ballot. Melina Mercouri had led on the first ballot, closely followed by Greer Garson. On the final ballot, Kerr won by a simple majority over Mercouri, Garson, MacLaine, Hiller, Hayley Mills (Pollyanna), Luana Patton (Home From the Hill) and Simmons.

I would've been rooting for Simmons to win (or even a nod). I thought Kerr was the best of the nominees, and I remain annoyed she didn't get nominated for Black Narcissus.

I agree with Magilla, though - a ridiculously good year for performances.

As for the race without Liz's stunt, I think it would've been MacLaine. After all, she was in the best picture favourite too.

Mason and I always assumed that Shirley would have won if Liz hadn't pulled her stunt. Especially since Deborah's movie was shut out 0 for 5. (Then again, I don't understand the appeal of The Sundowners, which i find to be stultifyingly dull.)

Magilla--and anybody else who wants to chime in on this issue--who do you think woulda won had not Liz nearly died? I've always assumed it would have indeed been Deborah Kerr...I'm assuming Greer Garson was outta the running due to the fact that she already had an Oscar and, it could be argued, her performance was almost supporting (odd that Ralph Bellamy wasn't nominated)...Melina Mercouri out because much of it was a foreign language performance (unlike Sophia Loren, Mercouri was not an established name in the US at the time)...which leads me to think it woulda been a race between Kerr and Shirley MacLaine...with the edge to Kerr because it was her 6th nomination....

Yes, Jean Simmons was robbed of a nomination for Elmer Gantry, but not necessarily the win. Shirley MacLaine was brilliant in The Apartment, but Deborah Kerr in The Sundowners was equally fine. After all, she won the New York Film Critics Award, whcih then had a greater hsitory of predicting the Oscar than the Globes for which she was inexplicably left in the cold.

I recently re-watched Greer Garson in Sunrise at Campobello. Cynthia Nixon's anemic protrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt in the recent TV pseduo-remake Warm Springs doesn't hold a candle to Greer's and neither does Jane Alexander (a great Eleanor in her own right in 175) to Ann Shoemaker's Anna Roosevelt.

I actually liked Melina Mercouri more in the Broadway musical version of Never on Sunday called Illya Darling than I did in the Jules Dassin original.

Truth be told 1960 had more great performances in all four acting categories than any other year in film history. Here are my top ten choices for actress:

1. Deborah Kerr in The Sundowners
2. Jean Simmons in Elmer Gantry
3. Greer Garson in Sunrise at Campobello
4. Shirley MacLaine in The Apartment
5. Eleanor Parker in Home from the Hill
6. Dorothy McGuire in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs
7. Lilli Palmer in Conspiracy of Hearts
8. Judy Holliday in Bells Are Ringing
9. Doris Day in Midnight Lace
10. Melina Mercouri in Never on Sunday

For actor:

1. Burt Lancaster in Elmer Gantry
2. Robert Mitchum in Home From the Hill (and The Sundowners)
3. Anthony Perkins in Psycho
4. Jack Lemmon in The Apartment
5. Spencer Tracy in Inherit the Wind
6. Fredric March in Inherit the Wind
7. Ralph Bellamy in Sunrise at Campobello
8. Alec Guinness in Tunes of Glory
9. John Mills in Tunes of Glory
10. Laurence Olivier in The Entertainer

Supporting Actress:

1. Wendy Hiller in Sons and Lovers
2. Eve Arden in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs
3. Janet Leigh in Psycho
4. Shirley Jones in Elmer Gantry
5. Glynis Johns in The Sundowners
6. Shirley Knight in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs
7. Angela Lansbury in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs
8. Jo Van Fleet in Wild River
9. Myrna Loy in From the Terrace
10. Spring Byington in Please Don't Eat the Daisies

Supporting Actor:

1. Trevor Howard in Sons and Lovers
2. George Peppard in Home From the Hill
3. Sal Mineo in Exodus
4. Fred MacMurray in The Apartment
5. Peter Ustinov in The Sundowners
6. Lee Kinsolving in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs
7. George Hamilton in Home from the Hill
8. Arthur Kennedy in Elmer Gantry
9. Dean Jagger in Elmer Gantry
10. Jack Kruschen in The Apartment

Oh, definitely, she deserved a nomination AND the win (even moreso than Lancaster).

I think it's because this was Kerr's last nomination; of course, in 1960/61, the Academy didn't know that Deborah would never be nominated again, but it was her 6th nomination, and I've often wondered, if Liz hadn't nearly died, might Kerr have finally won her much deserved Oscar?

I'm fond of The Sundowners and, yes, sentiment drives me to give Kerr the Oscar, but Reza is right, of the nominated performances, Mercouri is the best, with MacLaine very close behind.

I reviewed Never on Sunday tonight after almost 25 years. Melina Mercouri's performance continues to be a delight and has not lost any of it's charisma. The theme music always takes me back to the 1960s. However, I always thought the winning song that year was the title song in English. I was surprised to see that the song is sung in the film by Melina in Greek (I had no recollection of this). I did not know that back then the Academy awarded songs in a foreign language. I suppose the English version of the song became a bigger hit after the film's release.

The film's only negative aspect is Jules Dassin himself. Pity he did not cast somebody else in the role. He is truly pathetic in the lead role opposite his wife. Pity Melina was not awarded the Oscar for this larger-than-life role. Today everyone gravitates towards Deborah Kerr's performance (in The Sundowners) as the best of 1960 but I think Melina is head and shoulders above her.
