Re: BAFTA Winners

Thanks for nothing, BAFTA. Had they chosen Cumberbatch (as, my god, a British Academy ought to have) and either Smit-McPhee or Hinds in support, we'd have a real barn-burner of an acting race, with only DeBose set. Instead, the hive-mind prevails, and I guess we should be grateful the oddity of the actress slate keeps that one category suspenseful. The Broadcasters, later on, will surely ratify both male actors -- a pity they didn't release their results back in January, when Smit-McPhee would almost surely have won.

The sole positive surprise on the day was Licorice Pizza winning over home-town favorite Branagh. I don't think this locks in the Oscar win, but it sure helps.

The less said about the CODA screenplay win, the better. Who'd have thought JoJo Rabbit would so soon lose its status as worst screenplay choice in memory?

We may be looking at most of our eventual Oscar winners. We know Lead Actress and Editing cannot repeat since the respective BAFTA winners are not Oscar nominated.

Clearly the Brits loved DUNE since it triumphed in almost all the cinematic categories. I think two of the three places it missed are the ones it will most likely also lose at the Oscars. I think it will add Editing for a total of 6 wins.

Actress is still completely unsettled (which I am enjoying) so no comment on that.

This certainly bolsters the chances of LICORICE PIZZA winning Original Screenplay. Surprising BAFTA would pick P.T. Anderson over Kenneth Branagh, but the little California set movie must have spoken to them.

The Adapted Screenplay win is probably the most impactful on the race. THE POWER OF THE DOG is still the clear favorite for Best Picture and Director, but I am willing to start taking the threat of CODA more seriously. I guess we will have another Best Picture winner with only one other award, just like SPOTLIGHT.
