Best Oscar Year (3rd Decade)

My pick is 1951. An American in Paris, A Place in the Sun, A Streetcar Named Desire and The African Queen feature prominently, and most of the other nominees are respectable at least.

There were a lot of good years to choose from here, but I went with 1952. I thought it had a little bit more depth, at least in terms of how much I enjoyed the various films. My favorites from 1952 include Singin' in the Rain, High Noon, The Narrow Margin, Forbidden Games, and others. My favorite film from this decade of film is Roman Holiday from the following year, but there are a lot of excellent films.

1950 had the face-off of All About Eve and Sunset Blvd. but 1955, despite some of its head-scratching Best Picture nods, recognized some of the most memorable films of the decade including East of Eden, Summertime, Marty, and Picnic even if they didn't have the foresight to recognize The Night of the Hunter or All That Heave Allows.
