Both Chicago 7 and Palm Springs cross-cut between time frames, which is editor catnip. This doesn't completely negate Sound of Metal's chances for the Oscar -- the BAFTA Editing winner has sometimes been more predictive than the ACE.
The worst news is that goddamn Octopus Teacher. The doc slate is really lively this year -- I'd be happy enough with any of the other four winning -- and it's disheartening this March of the Penguins Subsequent Moviefilm seems to have won so many hearts.

Interesting. The favorite for the Oscars before tonight leaned towards Sound of Metal.

I thought the same thing when I was looking at the list.Sabin wrote:I think Minari is getting nominated. I think it's currently the dark horse to win Best Picture and it's a perfectly paced little film. Promising Young Woman has a shot at a nomination but I don't really know whose spot it's going to take. Ironically, Mank might be the likeliest. But, I think it'll lose out.rolotomasi99 wrote
While the Drama Eddie nominees could transfer perfectly to the Oscars, I think MINARI will be replaced by PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN.
Right now, I'm just predicting the Drama slate repeats.

Re: American Cinema Editors Guild or "Eddies"
Despite having double the movies due to the separate Comedy/Musical and Drama categories, there is often one Oscar nominee that was not included among the Eddies.
They have always been Best Picture nominees since the expansion beyond 5, which could be THE FATHER or JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH this year.
