Ah, so, but more than likely, he was looking for an excuse not to go. That way he could have his cake and eat it, too.OscarGuy wrote:Godard did not refuse the award, he simply refused to attend the ceremony. Re: Doris Day Update
Didn't Godard say yes, then change his mind?
O'Toole threatened not to come, but did so anyway.
Pickford and Myrna Loy, who also had hers delivered, were too ill to attend the ceremony back in the day when all they had to say was thank you. Debbie Reynolds is a more recent example of a no-show, but that was due to ill health.
Day flat outright refuses all requests including those of the AFI and unlike Reynolds, doesn't have a granddaughter to send in her place. The only way to get her to show up might be something that shines a spotlight on homeless dogs. They might even compromise by agreeing to send a film crew to her home to photograph her with her pets.

Didn't Godard also turn down his Honorary Oscar? They still gave it to him in absentia.Big Magilla wrote:She has turned down career tributes from the AFI as well as the Academy, but have they offered her the Hersholt? That might be one she'd be happy to show up for.
If Doris Day refuses to travel to Los Angeles surely the Academy can present it to her at home. They gave Pickford's Honorary Oscar to her at Pickfair.

Hasn't she already knocked one back already?Reza wrote:I would rather read about her getting an Honorary Oscar than some silly news that she is in fact two years older than what was thought.

Thought this would be a good place to post a link to a story on Doris Day currently in The Guardian:

Re: Doris Day in Talks to Appear in a Clint Eastwood Project
She's said for years that she thinks about doing a new album or making a film appearance, but says she doesn't get offers. I always thought Eastwood would be the perfect person to get her back, but it doesn't look like it will ever happen.

I wonder if the hubbub and excitement about her coming out of retirement will get her to reconsider.

I posted too soon. Apparently, the actress herself has already quashed the rumor:

Doris Day Update
I'm putting this under "Dream Projects" as I'm sure the idea of Doris Day ever appearing in another feature length film was the stuff of, well, dreams.
Doris Day reportedly lured out of retirement by Clint Eastwood
After a 47-year absence, Doris Day might be heading back to the big screen in a new film directed by Clint Eastwood.
The 91-year-old star of Calamity Jane has reportedly been in talks with Eastwood, her neighbour in Carmel Valley, California. According to German tabloid Bild, he presented her with a script on a recent visit.
It’s unknown what the role is but she is allegedly delighted with the opportunity and is involved in negotiations to make a return. She has allegedly made two demands: the film must be shot in Carmel and a cut of the profits must go to her animal welfare charity. Her last film was the 1968 romantic comedy With Six You Get Eggroll.
Eastwood, riding high off his biggest hit American Sniper, is working on a film based on the story of hero pilot Chesley Sullenberger, with Tom Hanks in the lead role. It’s not known if this is the film that Day is set to star in.
Day was known for roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much and romantic comedies Pillow Talk and Move Over, Darling. She was also famed for her singing career and long-running TV series The Doris Day Show. She turned down the role of Mrs Robinson in 1967’s The Graduate as she found the script “vulgar and offensive”.
Since retiring, Day has spent her time devoted to her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
