89th Oscars: Best Supporting Actress
Re: 89th Oscars: Best Supporting Actress
I've heard actors talk like that at awards shows before. I don't think it's arrogance but it can come off that way to us regular folks. I think they genuinely believe that acting and film are the great mirror on the world and that their work enhances peoples' lives. Plus, you have to have a big ego to be an actor, let's face it. Also, actors try to be as real as they can be in their acting, at least the good ones do. So it's not that she's being fake so much as she channels her real emotions when she is acting, which can make the two indistinguishable from one another.

Didn't catch the speech at first (a friend was over and we were talking), but after hearing the speech later, I'm convinced she has to be the most self-important woman in Hollywood. "I became an artist because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life."
I don't think I can roll my eyes hard enough at a statement so asinine.

Some people actually like her speech, but I can't wait for the inevitable SNL spoof SHOUTED TO THE RAFTERS:
"I AM SO GLAD THAT I BECAME AN ACTOR SO I CAN SHARE MY GIFT WITH ALL OF YOU. GOD TOLD ME, VIOLA, YOU GO GIRL! I WILL KEEP GOING NOW UNTIL I GET TO THAT GRAVEYARD AND SOMEONE ELSE WILL BE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO TELL MY STORY AND WIN AN OSCAR OF THEIR VERY OWN IN MY FOOTSTEPS!"

I missed the first ten seconds of this speech, and turned my head when I heard "graveyard" and "exhume the bodies." I don't mind Davis winning for Fences because it's about as good a performance as we will get from her. It caters to her best instincts. This speech caters to her worst.

Agree! such an over-rated actress- and such category fraud - at least the critics were correct with their early recognition of Naomie Harris and Michelle Williams - both way more deserving. Hope Viola can now just go back to TVITALIANO wrote:Her speech is exactly like her acting (which in my opinion is: fake). But at least, as someone said many years ago after Susan Hayward finally won her Oscar, now we can all relax. My God.

I don't know if they're fake. But they're indistinguishable from each other.

Ok.... Maybe Viola Davis isn't really acting in her movies.
