Every year, I struggle against picking a runner up. My total would've shot up to second place. So, you pick a runner up for two reasons: true uncertainty and hunching hedging. I have a hunch that Room will beat The Big Short for Best Adapted Screenplay, but I am truly split on if it's Mad Max or Star Wars for VFX or Mad Max or The Revenant for Sound Mixing and Makeup.

Best Picture – The Revenant
Best Foreign-Language Film – Son of Saul
Best Live Action Short - Shok
Best Animated Film – Inside Out
Best Animated Short - Sanjays Super Team
Best Documentary - Amy
Best Documentary Short - Body Team 12

Best Film Editing – Mad Max: Fury Road
Best Production Design – Mad Max: Fury Road
Best Costume Design – Cinderella

I, too, checked out the shorts this year, and I agree with Mister Tee -- it didn't make predicting any easier than going in blindly. It does, however, increase the likelihood I'll be annoyed on Oscar night -- I thought some of the live action shorts were fairly weak, and though I didn't dislike Sanjay's Super Team, I think it pales in comparison to World of Tomorrow and We Can't Live Without Cosmos. I've opted to go for the Pixar short under animated, simply based on the new voting rules which suggest that the most widely seen entries have an advantage, and pure guesses in the other fields.

My one big against-the-grain prediction is Carol under Original Score. It's actually quite a bit closer to what usually wins here than The Hateful Eight, and the movie has twice as many nominations. And I wonder if voters are as tuned into the idea of giving Morricone an overdue career honor as the Internet seems to be. I'm most likely wrong, but you have to take some swings.

A few things:

1) Since I (uncharacteristically) finished first in our Globes contest, I feel like I'm playing with house money. So, I've taken a few flyers; what's the point of winning with a cookie-cutter slate?

2) Thanks to pay-per-view and YouTube, I've seen all the non-doc shorts except the Pixar one. It has NOT made predicting any easier.

3) The Grammys had an amazingly strong competition for closing-place-of-honor at the In Memoriam -- Bowie, B.B. King, Glenn Frey, Natalie Cole and more. The Oscars this year have a comparatively thin field -- non-finishers of previous years, like Robin Williams and Peter O'Toole, would have easily taken the spot this year. Which I think will end up giving Magilla his dearest wish.

My picks:

Best film: The Big Short
Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio
Best Actress: Brie Larson
Best Sup. Actor: Mark Rylance
Best Sup. Actress: Kate Winslet
Best Director: Alejandro G. Innaritu
Best Adapted Screenplay: The Big Short
Best Original Screenplay: Spotlight
Best Song: Till It Happens to You
Best Cinematography: The Revenant
Best Costume Design: Cinderella
Best Production Design: Mad Max: Fury Road
Best Sound Mixing: The Revenant
Best Sound Editing: Mad Max: Fury Road
Best Film Editing: The Big Short
Best Music Score: The Hateful Eight
Best Visual Effects: Star Wars: the Force Awakens
(if it loses, I'll never vote against a best picture nominee again)
Best Makeup & Hairstyling: Mad Max: Fury Road
Best Foreign-Language Film: Mustang
(runner-up: Son of Saul) (I've got a feeling about this one, but obviously not a decisive one)
Best Animated Feature: Inside Out
Best Animated Short: Bear Story
Best Live Action Short: Shok
(runner-up: Day One)
Best Documentary Feature: Amy
Best Documentary Short: Body Team 12

1. Brooklyn, The Martian
2. Maureen O'Hara

Well, I won this last year buy picking the "out there" Best Picture and Director winner Birdman. So, here's mine...

(edit) I've edited mine as I just don't see the Academy voting The Big Short Best Picture/Director, even though I think it's the best of the bunch. I reckon The Revenant win Picture, though I have a feeling that George Miller will win Director. I know that seems unlikely, but it's hunch.

Picture: The Revenant
Director: George Miller - Mad Max
Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Actress: Brie Larson, Room
Supp. Actor: Sylvester Stallone, Creed
Supp. Actress: Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs
Original Screenplay: Straight Outta Compton (fuck it, why not)
Adapted Screenplay: The Big Short

Cinematography: The Revenant
Editing: Mad Max
Production Design: Mad Max
Costume Design: Mad Max
Original Score: Bridge Of Spies
Original Song: "Till It Happens To You", The Hunting Ground

Visual Effects: Star Wars

Animated Short: World of Tomorrow
Docu Feature: Amy
Docu Short: Last Day of Freedom
