Neither The Emigrants nor The New Land have ever been on DVD in the U.S. I made my own copies from the Warner Home Video laserdiscs I owned years ago. They're the sub-titled versions. The Movie Detective versions are also sub-titled so they're probably from either the laserdiscs or the 1994 VHS releases. The dubbed versions are taken from a 1976 ABC TV showing.

Oddly Amazon.com has The New Land available for streaming, but not The Emigrants. This may have been the situation with Netflix a few years ago.

I could swear I watched both The Emigrants and The New Land on DVD from Netflix a few years ago. Is it no longer available? Or did I just watch The New Land? I can't seem to recall now.

Thanks for recommending that site, Precious Doll.

Reza,

Have you had any luck tracking down you missing titles in this category?

About 5 months ago I found site which has lots of titles including a number of the ones on your list, with very nice prints and English subtitles. They are just DVD-R's with no cover art but are at very reasonable prices. I have been able to catch up with so many titles recently that have long eluded me. Some are from video masters but most are from digital sources.

The site is http://www.moviedetective.net

I highly recommend them and have ordered over 70 titles from them without any problems (limited myself to 10 titles at a time).

Confidence (1980) from Hungary directed by Istvan Szabo is to be released on DVD in May by the UK company Second Run. This company specializes is films from Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic from the 60's and 70's and now seem to be releasing films from the 80's. Confidence is well worth viewing and would have made a much better winner then the pedestrian Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears.

Raven's End & Adalen '31 are coming out sometime this year on DVD curiosity of Olive Films. It should be noted that Adalen '31 will be released under the title The Adalen Riots.

I think most of the Japanese films listed will find their way to DVD over the next few years through either Criterion, Masters of Cinema or the BFI.

Keeper of Promises (also known as The Given Word) is out on DVD in France, with a beautiful print and optional English subtitles.

Qivitoq was also released on DVD last year in Denmark and can probably be bought through DaaVeeDee. The film was interesting but the color/visuals (it was filmed in Greenland I think) are breathtaking.

L'Invitation (along with the two of the same directors other works, The Lacemaker (with Isabelle Huppert) and The Wonderful Crook (with Gerard Depardieu) have been scheduled for a DVD release in the U.K. for over a year now. Hopefully that will come to fruition sometime in the near future.

I have around 30 films to still see (including L'Invitation, Raven's End & Adalen '31) myself.

Of the ones you listed I have found and acquired the following online:

Immortal Love
Placido
Keeper of Promises
Raven's End
Woman in the Dunes (which will be easily available on English-subbed DVD as well, alas not in this country)
White Bim Black Ear
The Nest
The Milk of Sorrow

I've seen Placido and Keeper of Promises, which are both excellent near-masterpieces, and The Milk of Sorrow, which is very good and a very surprising nominee in this day and age.

and I have seen The Man Without a Past on DVD, I recommend it.

Most of the films you listed will be available online, I have seen many of them around the place. That would depend if you feel comfortable going that route, I do as I know many of these films I will have no opportunity to see otherwise.
