I haven't seen her performance but Octavia Spencer has been a hard-working character actress for years and years who toiled in TV guest-starring roles (I *just* saw her in a Wizards of Waverly Place episode from a few years ago) and bit parts in movies. She gets a plum role and wins an Oscar. It's a dream come true for her and it's why she's so emotional.
This thread is so gross. Who are half of you people posting?

I'd like to echo anonymous' post about how Spencer's win is a win for all the hardworking actors who've toiled in the background for years. Hers' is a performance that this category was originally meant to honor. Also, if you'll notice, she had the most impressive clip.
"The mantle of spinsterhood was definitely in her shoulders. She was twenty five and looked it."

Strange choice for a standing ovation, but I did like the overall acceptance.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of this particular performance but Octavia Spencer comes across as an incredibly intelligent, charismatic woman whenever I've seen her in interviews this past season. She also seems to be very talented. If anything, I'm hopeful that she will get more substantive roles as a result of this Oscar (she seems to have some very interesting projects lined up).
