Is this a joke about how big a front runner is Colin Firth, or Jesse Eisenberg's curly hair in The Social Network? :D

Only saw Exit Through The Gift Shop, Inside Job and Restropo. Would pick Gift Shop. Imaginative.

Did not see any of the Documentary Shorts, Live Action Shorts or Animated Shorts, even though they all played in local theatres last weekend.

There will probably be a lot of repeats in each prediction entry, which is why I think most of us have held off on this kind of thread till now. It's what will, not should win, and that makes for repetitive responses.

Best Picture: The Social Network
ru: The King's Speech
[I'm going slightly out-on-a-limb for this, because I'm hoping the "hipness" factor wins out. I liked The King's Speech but it's not the best of the year.]
possible upset: True Grit

Best Director: David Fincher, The Social Network
ru: Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
[They like Fincher enough to have nominated him before, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was a front-runner in 2008.]
possible upset: The Coen Bros.

Best Actor: Colin Firth, The King's Speech
ru: Jeff Bridges True Grit
[I would be shocked if Firth lost.]
possible upset: James Franco 127 Hours

Best Actress: Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
ru: Natalie Portman, Black Swan
[Small edge to Bening. They nominated her 3 prior times, it includes a hint of what many want to applaud (loving long-term gay union overcoming hurdles) while Portman's movie is dark and divisive.]
possible upset: I could see a surge in support for either Williams or Lawrence, but that's unlikely.

Best Supporting Actor: Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech
ru: Christian Bale, The Fighter
[Tough one. Either they go with the great child-actor- makes-good narrative or they go with a respected former winner in a Best Picture front-runner. I suspect Firth won't be alone with an award at the end of the night.]
possible upset: Ruffalo could do it, and so could Renner if there's held-over love from last year.

Best Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit
ru: Melissa Leo, The Fighter
[Guess it depends on how early people voted. If enough voted before Leo's infamous campaigning maybe she still wins. But a young actress hasn't grabbed this prize since 1993, and it is the only major place to honor her movie unless they loved True Grit more than we think.]
possible upset: Amy Adams, The Fighter

Best Original Screenplay: Inception
ru: The King's Speech
[Could go either way on this one. Cleverness vs. sentiment. Hoping for Nolan, and think by a hair he'll win, but I may be wrong.]
possible upset: Another Year or The Kids Are All Right

Best Adapted Screenplay: The Social Network
ru: True Grit
possible upset: Winter's Bone

Best Art Direction: Inception
ru: Alice in Wonderland
possible upset: The King's Speech

Best Cinematography: True Grit
ru: The Social Network
possible upset: Black Swan

Best Costume Design: The King's Speech
ru: Alice in Wonderland
possible upset: The Tempest

Best Film Editing: The Social Network
ru: 127 Hours
possible upset: The King's Speech

Best Animated Feature: Toy Story 3
ru: How to Train Your Dragon
possible upset: The Illusionist

Best Documentary Feature: Exit Through the Gift Shop
ru: Inside Job
possible upset: Gasland

Best Foreign Language Film: In a Better World
ru: Biutiful
possible upset: Dogtooth

Best Makeup: The Wolfman
ru: The Way Back
possible upset: Barney's Version

Best Original Score: The King's Speech
ru: The Social Network
possible upset: How to Train Your Dragon

Best Song: Toy Story 3
ru: Tangled
possible upset: Country Strong

Best Sound Editing: Inception
ru: True Grit
possible upset: Unstoppable

Best Sound Mixing: Inception
ru: The King's Speech
possible upset: Salt

Best Visual Effects: Inception
ru: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I
possible upset: Hereafter

Best Animated Short: Day & Night
ru: The Gruffalo
possible upset: Let's Pollute

Best Documentary Short: Killing in the Name
ru: Strangers No More
possible upset: The Warriors of Quigang

Best Live-Action Short: Na Wewe
ru: Wish 143
possible upset: The Confession

I know some will think I'm crazy for saying The King's Speech will only win a few prizes, but somehow I don't think the Academy is quite as sentimental as they used to be. Maybe it's wishful thinking.
