I made a few changes to the acting categories and selected alternates in acting and directing categories in my original post.

Changes are:
Joaquin Phoenix in place of Denzel Washington for Best Actor, with Washington as alternate.
Marion Cotillard in place of Maggie Smith in Best Actress, with Smith as alternate.
Javier Bardem in place of Robert De Niro in Supporting Actor, with Matthew McCaonaughey as alternate.
Judi Dench in place of Samantha Barks in Supporting Actress, with Amy Adams as alternate.
Ang Lee as alternate in Best Director.

18. Best Animated Feature

Brave
Frankenweenie
Paranorman
From Up on Poppy Hill (whatever hell that is, but I see people picking it)
Wreck-It Ralph
Alt.: Rise of the Guardians
From Up on Poppy Hill is the second film from Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyakazi (Spirited Away).

It is far superior to his first film Tales from Earthsea, which was nothing more then a failed effort to imulate his father's style and story technics. From Up on Poppy Hill is a vast improvement, with an intimate story set involving a group a teenagers just prior to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Whilst it bares some Studio Ghibli productions traits it is very much a departure from his father's style.

I really don't expect it to make the final five and having seen and liking the film I thought it would make a suitable filler.

All right, for the hell of it. I'm flying mostly blind this year; we'll see if that makes me a better predictor.

I fully expect my faith in Phoenix/Adams/PTAnderson to be unjustified, but some of the alternatives (esp. Maggie Smith in that thing) are too grisly for me to lend my name to.

Hoping for pleasant surprises; resigned to the usual thud of mediocrity around the edges.

All right, we're getting down to the wire, so here's what I'm going with. I'm putting forth the following theory, and we'll see whether it comes to pass: last year we got 9 Best Picture nominees, perhaps because there wasn't a ton of enthusiasm toward a concentrated few movies. But this year, there seems to be far more strength among the top batch of possibilities. So, perhaps, even though 2012 was overall a stronger year, might we see fewer Best Picture nominees? Since everyone else seems to be predicting in the 9/10 range, I'm going to go against the grain and say we only get 6 nominees.

Oops. I will consider it. Certainly is a possibility. One of the reasons I don't think Amour will get in for Picture is that there seems to be a lot of tough competition, but I might be able to trade Ruby Sparks out in the screenplay category. Just thought the writer's branch might throw in something we aren't expecting.

Mine are up on the main site, but here is my list.

It seems to me that The Master can easily garner that 5% support to get it on the Best Picture ballot, and seems the most sensible choice for the 5th slot in Best Director...it is seen as a Director's film, is the sort of critically praised, challenging piece that the director's branch likes to support (i.e. Mulholland Drive or Tree of Life) and has enough people who absolutely love it.

I miss the nominations of that group Damien was a part of. He'd always post them before the real Oscar nominations came out. Anybody remember those? Always delightfully outside of the box. Wish we could get access to them again.
