So, do you see her as a lock?

Also, I was going to delete Nicole Kidman from my predictions after Bafta, but I just found out that her film was not eligible here.

Could Helen Mirren be this years Tilda Swinton?

Swinton was nominated for everything last year (Critics Choice, SAG, Golden Globe and Bafta) and ended up missing oscar.

I think Lawrence and Chastain are the only locks. The other three spots are up for grabs between Watts, Mirren, Cotillard, Riva, followed by Wallis, Dench and Smith.

"Amour" or "Beasts of the Southern Wild" may pop up instead of "Pi" or "Perks."

Amour is an original screenplay, not adapted in which case you could consider dropping Ruby Sparks and replace with Amour - a far more probable outcome.

BEST PICTURE

Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
The Impossible
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Les Miserables
Moonrise Kingdom
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

With so many films being talked about seriously, I just don't see them nominating less than 10.

BEST DIRECTOR

Ben Affleck, Argo
Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
Ang Lee, The Life of Pi
David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln

Obviously, Tom Hooper might get it. Or, like some suggest Haneke or one of the Andersons could sneak in. But since I'm not predicting Picture noms for either Amour or The Master, I think they'll be absent in this category. I think the surprise could be Russell despite being passed for DGA, though Tarantino is equally possible.

BEST ACTOR

Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook
John Hawkes, The Sessions
Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables
Denzel Washington, Flight

Phoenix is the most likely to get in over one of these guys. If the Academy could keep nominating Brando and Scott after their anti-Oscar remarks over the years, then Phoenix could still get in. I just don't think the film is loved enough, and there is strong competition this year. If they are in a generous mood, maybe they'll nominate Gere or Affleck (probably over Cooper), but it's unlikely at this point.

BEST ACTRESS

Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
Helen Mirren, Hitchcock
Emmanuelle Riva, Amour
Naomi Watts, The Impossible

Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz are the only two I think who can really replace anyone, although Dench ("Best Exotic...") or Smith ("Quartet") could conceivably grab enough votes.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Alan Arkin, Argo
Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook
Leonardo DiCaprio, Django Unchained
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln

Arkin doesn't really deserve this spot, but he'll be the representative (like Wahlberg in "The Departed") for the cast. I know these are all previous nominees, but I don't really see anyone topping them unless Eddie Redmayne, Matthew McConaughey or Bruce Willis manage to get a lot of love from voters. Waltz or Jackson could replace DiCaprio, but don't think that'll happen.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Amy Adams, The Master
Ann Dowd, Compliance
Sally Field, Lincoln
Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
Helen Hunt, The Sessions

Because I don't see another all-repeat nominee list, I'm predicting Dowd over Maggie Smith, but if "Les Miz" is really popular Samantha Barks or Amanda Seyfried could also fit the bill.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Argo
The Impossible
Life of Pi
Lincoln
The Perks of Being a Wallflower

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" may pop up instead of "Pi" or "Perks."

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Amour
Django Unchained
The Master
Moonrise Kingdom
Zero Dark Thirty

The writers may throw something like "Ruby Sparks" in as a long-shot, a la "Margin Call" or "In the Loop." "Looper" and/or "Cabin in the Woods" could happen, too.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

Brave
Frankenweenie
Hotel Transylvania
ParaNorman
Wreck-It-Ralph

"The Pirates! Band of Misfits," "Rise of the Guardians" or "The Lorax."

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

The Impossible
Life of Pi
Lincoln
The Master
Zero Dark Thirty

"Flight," "Beasts..." or "Django..."

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Anna Karenina
Cloud Atlas
Lincoln
Mirror, Mirror
Les Miserables

"Dark Shadows," "Django..." or "A Royal Affair"

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
The Gatekeepers
How to Survive a Plague
The Invisible War
Searching for Sugar Man

BEST MAKEUP

The Hobbit
Lincoln
Men in Black 3

"Hitchcock" or "Looper"

BEST FILM EDITING

Argo
Flight
The Impossible
Lincoln
Zero Dark Thirty

"Les Miserables," "Life of Pi" or "Skyfall"

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

Amour
The Intouchables
No
A Royal Affair
War Witch

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

Michael Danna, Life of Pi
Alexandre Desplat, Argo
Patrick Doyle, Brave
Jonny Greenwood, The Master
John Williams, Lincoln

Perhaps: Desplat for "Zero Dark Thirty" or "Moonrise Kingdom." Danny Elfman for "Frankenweenie" or "Silver Linings Playbook." Thomas Newman for "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" or "Skyfall."

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

"Learn Me Right" from Brave
"Ancora qui" from Django Unchained
"Suddenly" from Les Miserables
"Still Alive" from Paul Williams Still Alive
"Skyfall" from Skyfall

Others possible: "Pi's Lullaby" from Life of Pi, "Song of the Lonely Mountain" from The Hobbit or "Ladies of Tampa" from Magic Mike.

PRODUCTION DESIGN

Anna Karenina
Cloud Atlas
Django Unchained
Lincoln
Les Miserables

"Argo," "The Hobbit" or "Zero Dark Thirty" maybe.

BEST SOUND MIXING

The Avengers
Life of Pi
Les Miserables
Skyfall
Zero Dark Thirty

"Lincoln" or "The Impossible," but could also be a place to nominate critical flops "John Carter" or "Battleship." "Flight" is also very possible.

BEST SOUND EDITING

The Dark Knight Rises
Life of Pi
Les Miserables
Skyfall
Zero Dark Thirty

I threw in "Dark Knight Rises," because I don't think the two sound categories will match up exactly. Same basic alternates, plus maybe something like "the Hobbit."

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

The Avengers
The Dark Knight Rises
The Hobbit
Life of Pi
Looper

"Prometheus," "Cloud Atlas" or "The Amazing Spider-Man."

This is what I have down, too, rudeboy. I just can't imagine a slate that doesn't include a first-time nominee for this category. It's the one race that most often has at least one (last year there were four). I've also been seeing several articles about Ann Dowd on various sites. Her personal story and the fact that she's exactly the kind of journeywoman actress for which Best Supporting Actress was originally intended to honor, could all work in her favor.

In other news: I find it interesting that we have potential re-matchups between Helen Hunt/Judi Dench (this time in BSA) and Tommy Lee Jones/Leonardo DiCaprio in the spear race. Calls to mind their former showdowns in 1997 and 1993, respectively. Those were both hotly contested at the time and seem to be cited over the years as examples where the lesser performance prevailed.

I toyed with the idea of moving Helen Hunt to lead but didn't think it had much traction - although it's probably more likely than a double nod for Maggie Smith.
