This really is a weak year to come up with five worthy nominees

Who, for god’s sake, votes here? I've just seen The Impossible this afternoon. What I’m going to say has nothing to do with the quality of it (I, personally, found it to be the kind of sleazy re-enactment one sees on TV reality channels, only with better production values and recognizable performers). But for whatever one may think of it, objectively there is nothing in Watts’ performance – not content wise, not quantity wise, no nothing – which amounts to something which deserves an award consideration. It’s not that she’s bad – but all she’s required to do here is to be an efficient vessel for an extremely limited character arch – first the picture perfect wife and mother, than a suffering victim of the elements. And she is not even the lead here. Tom Holland who plays her son is. I was sitting there, waiting anxiously for her PERFORMANCE to start – and it never did.

Once again, there is something so depressingly lazy in this current award mentality, in which everything seems to be about preconceived notions so the contents and merits of films themselves are practically negligible. So – a respectable, nominateable actress playing a heroic, real life character = award consideration. And I see it here and everywhere else – countless discussions, analysis, predictions regarding movies no one have actually seen nor particularly interested in seeing. It’s really not about the films at all anymore - and in a way it’s fitting, since there really aren't any films worth caring for out there anymore – it’s about the thrill of this reality show called “Awards Season”. Whatever.
