I thought L.A. went for obscure actresses in years where the favorites were generally the best of a weak lot. I happened to agree with them on last year's pick of Jeong-hie Yun, the South Korean Sophia Loren who came out retirement to play a part that was eons better than what Meryl Streep, Glenn Close and Viola Davis did combined.

Anyhow, on to this year:

There's a tweet out there from a guy who's a member who swears LA isn't going to just follow the queue on Zero Dark. Remember, last year, it seemed like The Artist and Hugo were going to finish 1-2 everywhere, and LA surprised with The Descendants/The Tree of Life.

Film: The Master
ru: Zero Dark Thirty

Actor: Joaquin Phoenix (The Master)
ru: Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)

Actress: Emmanuelle Riva (Amour)
ru: Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)

...we'll find out if LA'll go for the obvious choice, or if they just prefer naming obscure actresses to achieve greater hipsterism. (Which, as we all know, is the National Society's gig)

Sup. Actor: Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln)
ru: Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master)

Sup. Actress: Amy Adams (The Master)
ru: Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master)
ru: Michael Haneke (Amour)

Screenplay: Silver Linings Playbook
ru: Moonrise Kingdom

Cinematography: The Master
ru: Life of Pi

Design: Anna Karenina
ru: Les Miserables

Music: Django Unchained
ru: The Master

Foreign Language: Amour
ru: The Kid with a Bike

Animated: Paranorman
ru: Wreck-It Ralph

Documentary: This Is Not a Film

I have Emmanuelle Riva down right now. I'm sure she's great, though I'm not on pins and needles for a "more depressing than usual" Michael Haneke film. That being said, I'm quietly hoping that Jennifer Lawrence picks up something for her work in Silver Linings Playbook which I am now convinced has had a failed marketing campaign. They rolled it out like a niche film and not the boisterous movie that it is. And now that Zero Dark Thirty has been seen and heralded as a masterpiece, its contender status is looking weaker and weaker.

I don't think L.A. will be looking too far past the front-runners this year as the critics, not just the bloggers, were strongly in favor of a Jennifer Lawrence or, one assumes latterly, Jessica Chastain. If they go foreign it will most likely be Emmanuelle Riva.

Look no further then Nadezhda Markina in Elena. Excellent reviews, her performance dominates the film and it did enough business to not be off the LA film critics radar. She delivers in spades and stands shoulder to shoulder with Emmanuelle Riva, Yoon Jeong-he, Kim Hye-ja, and Yolande Moreau.

Best Actress – Emmanuelle Riva, Amour (r.u. Marion Cotillard, Rust and Bone)
...I'm trying to think of a 2012 equivalent of Yoon Jeong-he, Kim Hye-ja, and Yolande Moreau (whom, I doubt I could have ever predicted) and the closest I can find are these two.

Are these your predictions or what was actually awarded?
