I'm most thrilled for Bruce Willis getting in for Moonrise Kingdom, such a wonderful performance. I'm also happy for Michael Pena for getting a nomination but that's category fraud, I consider him a co-lead in End of Watch.

the Spirit Awards are in Weinstein's pocket. Let's recall that his films have made the Spirit Awards a significant player in Oscar history. I really don't think the Spirit Awards would be what they are today were it not for him. I think they "waived" the budgetary rule simply because it was so close and they'll probably revise the figure at a later date (inflation, people!).

But I honestly don't think any film produced by a major studio, or their subsidiaries, regardless of budget, should be eligible. After all, how can real indie studios compete with studios that have indiscriminate wealth to throw at a campaign? It's why any Spirit Award nominee that's also an Oscar nominee has a 95% chance of taking the prize. Only three or four times in history has an Oscar nominee in a category not taken home the prize.

Good point. Hell, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is not even eligible by their own rules since its $21 m budget is over the $20 m limit.

I'm pleased to see Matthew McConaughey nominated for Killer Joe. It may be my favorite film so far this year. I know he doesn't have a shot in hell, but I am nonetheless hoping he winds up surprising on Oscar nomination morning.
