Omar Sy was the first black actor nominated ever here, the film was a humongous success, there were charges of elitism at the Césars after the snubs of that popular Dany Boon film several years ago, and Intouchables is a Canal+ project and they own the French film industry more or less. Plus, Dujardin winning so hugely overseas probably bred that special kind of French jealousy.

Not really unexpected as Intouchables was a huge popular success here (nine times more admissions than The Artist) and Omar Sy was the most probable way to honor the movie, as it was obviously not going to win Best Picture.

I think The Artist did just fine and the Dujardin loss doesn't represent any kind of danger oscarwise, as it was most conveniently switched to a Bejo win for Best Actress.

The Artist, obviously hit it big winning Picture, Director, Actress, Cinematography, Production Design, and Score, but, for some huge, unexpected reason, Jean Dujardin lost Best Actor to Omar Sy in Intouchables.
