Although I didn't love "Dragon Tattoo", any awards it wins for Art Direction is well deserved.

As for Tree of Life, how much of the authenticity can be attributed to the sets vs. the overall production (costumes, hair & makeup, etc.) I honestly don't remember any sets other than the childhood home.

The Tree of Life should be in there for sure. It's great! But Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy absolutely has the best production design of the year.
I also admired the authentic (to my eyes) design of those two films, but I was not sure what was actually created for the movies and what was just well preserved old buildings.

Does anyone know how it works with the Academy for determining sets versus real buildings? Are the set designer Academy members just trusted to know the difference between something built for the movie and something the location scouts found? Do the studios send the Academy information on which movies had elaborate sets?

If all the interiors in THE TREE OF LIFE and TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY were sets, then they should obviously be nominated. However, if the majority of the locations used were just well preserved old buildings then it would not be fair to nominate them over films with actual sets they built themselves.

For the Guild, I also wonder how they know which films deserve nominations for the Contemporary sets? Is it just some sixth sense set designers have for telling the difference between a set and an actual location?

Hopefully the only precursor the film will have, though it might also get a contemporary costume nomination.

Here's my quick commentary on the nominations:

If Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy can make the list, then The Tree of Life should have been able to. I'm guessing The Tree of Life may be struggling to find interest among the voters.

How in the world could they not have nominated The Tree of Life -- probably the best, most accurate '50s recreation I've ever seen (and subtle, too). Guess they must all be jealous of Jack Fisk.
