Random cool thing that I did the other night: my buddy and former co-writer, A.A. Dowd, is now the head film critic of Time Out Chicago, and he got to vote in these nominations. So he called me up as he filled out his ballot. There was a very strong Margaret bloc that was only intermittently successful in getting at least Anna Paquin nominated. He tried to get Margaret in for screenwriting, and why The Tree of Life needs a nomination there I don't know. But his dog in the race was A Separation and at least he and several other passionate individuals got it in for screenwriting. And apparently Martha Marcy May Marlene is a little more divisive than I would imagine, and even still they got it in for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay on top of Most Promising Filmmaker and Performer. He also pushed pretty hard for Michael Shannon.

He'll be voting...
Best Picture - The Tree of Life
Best Director - Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life
Best Actor - Michael Shannon, Take Shelter
Best Actress - Elizabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene
Best Supporting Actor - Nick Nolte, Warrior
Best Supporting Actress - Jessica Chastain, The Tree of Life
Best Adapted Screenplay - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Best Original Screenplay - A Separation
Best Cinematography - The Tree of Life
Best Original Score - Drive
Best Animated Film - Rango
Best Documentary - The Interrupters
Best Foreign Film - A Separation
Most Promising Performer - Elizabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene
Most Promising FIlmmaker - Sean Durkin, Martha Marcy May Marlene

I see Roger Ebert still has some influence...he loved Uncle Boonmee.

Haven't seen the film yet, but it's nice to see a group recognizing Anna Paquin's performance, which I've heard is quite good indeed.

Finally Jessica Chastain gets nominated for the right film. She's transcendental in The Tree of Life. And yay for Hunter McCracken, arguably the best performance by a child actor since Dean Stockwell.
