"Think You Can Wait" plays like the lost track from High Violet. I love The National and it's one of their loveliest recent songs. That'd be a fantastic surprise from an admittedly lovely film.

You're both right. Hello Hello is written by EJ & LG and the Globes did nominate the song. I've never wanted a song to get nominated for an Oscar so badly in my life. Can you imagine? The crusty old coots at the Academy having to sit through a Lady Gaga/Elton John performance? That would be outstanding...but it won't happen. I will bet anything the Academy bypasses the song...after all, their song tastes in the last few years have been abysmal.

My predictions, though I have heard none of these songs yet. I'm missing all the movies this season...

Wow… this is pretty awesome.

“Jose and Pilar” is Portugal’s submission for foreign language film. It’s a documentary about the last days of Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago (nobel proze for literature in 1998) and his relationship with his wife Pilar in the Spanish island of Lanzarote were they lived during the last years of his live.

This song is sung in “Fado” style, the Portuguese music style that was just considered world’s intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO a couple of weeks ago.

It’s stand no chance in being nominated, but it’s nice to see it shortlisted.

"Collision of Worlds" is an end credits song but end credits songs have a shot at making it in if it's played over elaborate and colorful end credits a la "Jai Ho" which is what it is. Otherwise, they tend to favor songs that are integrated into the narrative which is what the songs from The Muppets and Captain America are.

I haven't seen The Help so I don't know where it stands so I'm just guessing.

So the Madonna song from "W.E." called "Masterpiece" is ineligible, as is "The Show" from "Moneyball". No other major omissions or surprises i can think of

On Thursday, January 5, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song, in random order, for voting members of the Music Branch in Los Angeles. Following the screenings, members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system of voting. If no song receives an average score of 8.25 or more, there will be no nominees in the category. If only one song achieves that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score shall be the two nominees. If two or more songs (up to five) achieve that score, they shall be the nominees. A DVD copy of the song clips will be made available to those branch members who are unable to attend the screening and who request it for home viewing. A mail-in ballot will be provided.

Under Academy rules, a maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. If more than two songs from a film achieve a score of 8.25 or more, the two songs with the highest scores will be the nominees.

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
