Swinton goes the season without managing a win (almost only counting in horseshoes). A second win for an ineligible actress is vaguely disappointing when they might have boosted someone deserving. (I know, I generally argue we shouldn't ask critics to pimp for Oscar nods; fine -- I contradict myself).

Actually, when I tried to recall if I might have said something like you mentioned, it occurred to me I might have been disappointed not to see Swinton get a boost -- but I wouldn't have expressed that at the time of LA voting, because I didn't see Julia until Christmas week. That I said it after the second win, in January, is more comprehensible, and, I guarantee you, wholly motivated by my affection for Swinton, whose great performance was exactly the sort that needed critical boosting and didn't get it.

I'm alot cooler with this early in a season, especially in a year where there are plenty of solid candidates who don't need the visibility.

I think October is about when Carlos was exhibited here, at the Lincoln Plaza. Is the mere fact it was on TV near the same time disqualifying? Is everything that shows on IFC in Theatres ineligible?

I had to read that quote a couple of times to realize it was referring to Swinton in Julia last year, not the moribund I Am Love this year.

I don't get the love for Mother either. Maybe they were just saying they prefer crazy in a language they don't understand to crazy (Portman) in one they do.

These are some really good choices. Very happy for Kim Hye-ja.

Mister Tee, didn't you complain last season about critics that voted on Moreau as opposed to a genuine oscar dark horse?
I don't recall doing that, but anything's possible. I hadn't seen Moreau at that point and obviously didn't have an opinion about her.

When was Carlos on Sundance as the miniseries? Prior to its US fall release? Time Warner's offering it as on-demand right now, but only the two-hour-ish version, and I've been told to hold out for the full-length.

What's interesting about this year's results, as opposed to LA's previous foreign-language winners, is most of those came in years when the mainstream/English-language candidates were lackluster (as last year's best actress). The choices this year came in categories where there were perfectly popular-plus-critic-approved options.

I know I'm going to be combing the foreign-language lists next year when I do any LA predicting.

If by this you mean pick something besides Social Network, I doubt that'll happen. But I do think they have lots of best actor options.

Perhaps echoing your thought, I'd say LA seems bipolar -- going with either Oscar faves (Network and Firth) or seeming no-hopers (unless there's some possibility Carlos can stage a City of God-like run at directing/screenplay?). Jacki Weaver's the only pick that sits in the classic "critics trying to move the Oscar dial" mode.

Which is fine by me. I'd much rather the critics go their own way and quit trying to "influence" the Oscars -- as, say, Houston, Dc and Detroit seem to be abjectly attempting.

Yes, the old man in prison. It's the best performance in the movie.

Cesar; the boss.

Had to IMDB it myself, though I assumed it would be him.

This continues LA's interesting tradition of seeking out one supporting winner from a foreign language film.

Does anyone know which one was Niels Arestrup in A Prophet?

EDIT: Ah, of course, he was the mob boss.
