My guess is they decided the movie was too male-centric (no female characters) to be honored even if directed by a woman.

She should've been a shoo-in. It's making the statement that women can be just as great (if not better) at making bad-ass war movies as men. Picking Nora Ephron is like saying women directors are at their best making romantic comedies/relationship movies.
