I would be very interested to hear your reasoning behind this, Damien, since the common assumption is that this is one of the most locked-up categories of the night.
Well, it's no fun to do predictions if you don't make at least one that goes against the grain. And I admit this is largely wishful thinking because I just don't get the acclaim for Waltz, whose performance is a mess. One moment, he's a chillingly cold monster, the next a cartoon buffoon.
Plus, I think there may be some hesitancy among Academy voters to vote for a sadistic Nazi. Ralph Fiennes much more accomplished (and star-making) performance in the beloved Schindler's List got short shrift, so maybe once again they'll confuse the actor with the role. Plus Woody Harrelson gibes a wonderful, much more textured (and sympathetic) performance. And he's one of the coolest guys in Hollywood.
This horoscope site that sends me daily predictions has also jumped onto the Oscar prediction bandwagon. According to them:
''In the Best Supporting Actor department, Woody Harrelson, a Water Sign Cancer with a fiery Sagittarius Moon, nominated for The Messenger, will enjoy a double-shot of astrological support. Expect him to be standing tall on the podium on Oscar night. His most powerful competition is likely to come from Libra Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds''.
