Longer, maybe, but not necessarily better. Five songs from the crappy remake of Fame?
Beats having the same amount from High School Musical 3.
Actually, 10 songs.

Any year with Randy Newman and Maury Yeston as your frontrunners is a better year!

On the surface, the list for this year looks much better than last year's. Any one for seeing the Bruno song performed live with Snoop Dogg, Elton John, Sting, and Bono?

The Princess and the Frog will probably nab a nomination -- the Disney musical precedent is pretty strong -- but I heard a number of songs at the Disney convention and was underwhelmed by all of them, and I usually love Randy Newman.

But I'll of course reserve judgment until I see the film.

Nine has only two ELIGIBLE new songs, from what I hear. The third new song is an existing score set to new lyrics.

I hope "All Is Love" gets nominated, just to find out how they're gonna perform it at the Oscar telecast.

Here's a shortlist of possible contenders for this category courtesy of The Backstage:

"All is Love," Karen O, Where the Wild Things Are (Karen O and Kids)
"All My Days," Alexi Murdoch, Away We Go (Alexi Murdoch)
“Almost There,” Randy Newman, The Princess and the Frog (Anika Noni Rose)
"Back to Back", Fame (Collins Pennie feat Ashleigh Haney)
"Can't Hide from Love", Fame (Naturi Naughton & Collins Pennie)
"Cinema Italiana," Maury Yeston, Nine (Kate Hudson)
"The Climb," Jessi Alexander, Jon Mabe, Hannah Montana: The Movie (Miley Cyrus)
"Depression Era," Patterson Hood, That Evening Sun (Patterson Hood)
“Dig a Little Deeper,” Randy Newman, The Princess and the Frog (Jenifer Lewis)
"Dove of Peace," Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen, Sting, Bono, Snoop Dogg and Elton John)
“Down in New Orleans,” Randy Newman, The Princess and the Frog (Randy Newman)
"Fantastic Mr. Fox," Jarvis Cocker, Fantastic Mr. Fox (Jarvis Cocker)
"Get On the Floor", Fame (Naturi Naughton & Collins Pennie)
"Help Yourself," Sad Brad Smith, Up in the Air (Sad Brad Smith)
"Hold Your Dream" ,Fame (Kay Panabaker, Asher Book & Naturi Naughton)
“If I’m a Human," Randy Newman, The Princess and the Frog (Michael-Leon Wooley)
“I Got Friends on the Other Side,” Randy Newman, The Princess and the Frog (Keith David)
"I See in Color," Mary J. Blige, Precious (Mary J. Blige)
"(I Want To) Come Home," Paul McCartney, Everybody's Fine (Paul McCartney)
"Never Knew I Needed," Randy Newman, The Princess and the Frog (Ne-Yo)
"New Divide," Linkin Park, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen (Linkin Park)
"Only You," Sinead O'Connor, The Young Victoria (Sinead O'Connor)
"Stu's Song," Ed Helms and Todd Phillips, The Hangover (Ed Helms)
"Take It All," Maury Yeston, Nine (Marion Cotillard)
"Time for Miracles," 2012 (Adam Lambert)
"Trust Me," Marvin Hamliisch, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, The Informant! (Steve Tyrell)
"Try", Fame (Asher Book)

I think Where the Wild Things Are has enough good, original music to at least get one track in there.

Karen O winning an Oscar? Could be interesting.

Reportedly, Nine has three new original songs as well. Then you have The Princess and the Frog, the first Disney animated musical in a decade with songs by Randy Newman... I think this year will be good for at least three songs.

Not sure if this has been discussed, but felt if it hasn't, it should be.

Oscar 2010: New Rules in Best Song Category
by Anna Robinson | Jun 30, 2009

This past June 23, the governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved new rules for the 2010 Academy Awards. In addition to the previously announced change in the Best Picture category — which will now include 10 nominees — another important change was made in the Original Song category.

As per the Academy’s press release, "the governors approved the Music Branch Executive Committee recommendation that if no song achieves a minimum average score of 8.25 in the nominations voting, there be no original song nominees and thus no Oscar presented for the category. If only one song achieves the required minimum, it and the song with the next highest score will be deemed the nominees. If two or more songs achieve the minimum score, they will be the nominees though no more than five nominees can be selected. Previously, the rules dictated that there be no more than five but no fewer than three nominees in the category."

Rules are reviewed annually by individual branch and category committees. The Awards Rules Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors for approval.

Academy Award nominations in all categories will be announced on February 2, 2010. The 2010 Academy Awards presentation will be telecast live by ABC on Sunday, March 7, 2010.
