The marketing guy who came up with the idea of expanding the Best Picture nominations to ten has been elected President. Here's Anne Thompson two cents worth:

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has a new public face: the Board of Governors elected six-year board and executive branch member Tom Sherak president on Tuesday night. He takes over for genial Sid Ganis, a victim of term limits: he served the maximum four consecutive one-year terms. Ganis remains on executive committee as immediate past president. Sherak was treasurer; producer Howard Koch will take on that role. The president is closely involved with all Academy functions, from various rule changes to prepping the annual Oscarcast and helping to select its producer and host.

New officers elected Tuesday night include writer Phil Robinson and Disney/Pixar exec John Lasseter, who represents the shorts and animation branch. Other officers elected were Actors Branch governor Tom Hanks (first vice president) and Producers Branch governor Kathleen Kennedy (vice president).

Ganis and Sherak are both good guys who know how to swim with the sharks. Sherak joined Twentieth Century Fox distribution from the exhibition side and rose to chairman of the domestic film group and sr. v-p of Fox Filmed Entertainment. He then partnered with ex-Fox chief Joe Roth at Revolution Studios. A passionate fundraiser for multiple sclerosis, Sherak is now consulting for Marvel Studios.
