Well, if we're talking "Oscar history", it should probably be mentioned that anytime Barbra was "acting" in the film rather than singing, it was bordering on atrocious. I don't see how anyone could've even considered that performance worthy of an Oscar nomination. Razzie perhaps, but not an Oscar.

It looks like Russell Crowe was being considered for the Norman Maine role. Maybe Jon Hamm?

A Star Is Born... again: Clint Eastwood in talks to direct Beyonce in yet another remake of Hollywood classic

They are hardly two names you would expect to hear in the same sentence.

But pop princess Beyonce and Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood are currently in negotiations to team up on a third remake of A Star Is Born.

Warner Bros have confirmed that the pair are in talks for a green-lit fourth version of the classic film, slated for release in 2012.
Odd couple: Beyonce and Clint Eastwood are set to team up on a third remake of classic film A Star Is Born
Beyonce signed on to the project back in 2008, but was rumoured to have dropped out after lengthy delays.

The Single Ladies hitmaker will take on the role previously held by Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland in the 1976 and 1954 adaptations, and Janet Gaynor in the 1937 original. She will play up and coming starlet Esther Blodgett, later Vicki Lester, who falls for a has-been rockstar.

Russell Crowe was originally signed on to star opposite Beyonce as Norman Maine/John Norman Howard.
The Gladiator star spoke about the film last April, when he said he believed Beyonce, 29, had dropped out.
'I think she’s pulled out of it. I’m still chatting about it,' he told Extra at the time.

'It’s one of those stories that’s been made a lot, but I think it’s still quite a big focus – you can see that in terms of the popularity of things like American Idol.'
The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes was also connected with the project last year but also pulled out.
Now that Eastwood, who helmed Million Dollar Baby, Changeling and Invictus, is in talks to lend his Oscar-winning touch to the film, the rumour mill is buzzing over who will take over the male lead.

Movie website Deadline reports that Warner Bros are hoping to sign Will Smith, while P Diddy and Beyonce's husband Jay-Z are also rumoured to be in consideration.
Robert Downey Jr and Mad Men star Jon Hamm's names have also been suggested.

Billy Gerber, Basil Iwanyk and Jon Peters, who worked on the 1976 version starring Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, are producing.

Some people need to learn their Oscar history.

Janet Gaynor was nominated and lost.

Judy Garland was nominated and lost.

Barbara Streisand wasn't nominated.

And if an Oscar winner and pop superstar like Babs can't get an Oscar nomination for the role, what makes Beyoncé think she can? Besides, singers (who are big stars at the time) don't tend to get nominated. Think Madonna or Courtney Love or Beyonce the last time.

The fact that she's so open about her aspirations will probably chafe a lot of Oscar voters.

Of course, Eastwood has been known to elicit Oscar-nominated performances. However, even he can't do it all the time.

Beyonce Kes? Did she change her name?

Clint Eastwood seems like the wrong director for this material. Somebody (Jennifer Hudson, MoNique?) needs to tell Beyonce she needs to do more than stay in shape to win an Oscar. Hudson in a weak year could get away with singing her heart out while doing minimalist acting, but a role like Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester or whatever new name they give her requires a lot more. Just ask Barbra Streisand.

I hate to trounce on a film that hasn't even been made yet, but this sounds like it will be Eastwood's third underwhelming achievement in a row.

Beyonce lands Clint Eastwood as 'A Star Is Born' director

January 20, 2011 | 5:45 pm

Beyonce Kes just got a major break in her
longtime bid for an Oscar: Clint Eastwood has
signed on to direct her in the Warner Bros. update of "A Star Is Born."

Eastwood's announcement more than solidifies the
flick, which has seen several incarnations over
the past year (or years) with various directors
and male talent attached (Beyonce has long been the female lead in mind).

Last February a short list of names including Russell Crowe, Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr. were circulating to play opposite the pop sensation, as an alcoholic superstar in love with Knowles' budding singer.

A current short list includes varied types like
Will Smith, Eddie Murphy and Jon Hamm, according
to Deadline Hollywood.

Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson brought
the tale to life in 1976, earning permanent spots
in pop culture for their efforts. Streisand won a
Golden Globe for her acting performance and best
original song but saw Oscar love only in the original song category.

Knowles, wife of rap mogul Jay-Z, has always
been open about her Academy Award aspirations. In
2009, she told Self magazine that the thought of snatching that trophy motivated everything down to her fitness.

Referring to a painting of the Oscar that hangs
above her treadmill, she said, "I look at it, and
I'm like 'OK, I have to stay in shape.'"

It was 2006's "Dreamgirls" that gave Knowles her
best critically received performance, yet her
awards campaign stalled in the presence of
Jennifer Hudson's breakout effort in the same
film (Hudson won the Oscar for supporting actress).

But now Beyonce has another chance at bat and
under the direction of Eastwood, she could
transcend her previous high-camp fare
("Obsessed") and pop-culture cakewalks ("Austin
Powers in Goldmember"). Eastwood won directing
Oscars for "Million Dollar Baby" and "Unforgiven"
and was nominated in that category for "Mystic
River" and "Letters From Iwo Jima."
