Peter Sarsgaard to Be 'Green Lantern's Bad Doctor

by Elisabeth Rappe Jan 12th 2010 // 5:52PM

Since Carol Ferris was cast in The Green Lantern last week, you know the bad guys can't be far behind. We now have an official name being bandied about because according to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Sarsgaard is in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond.

Here's the first place we're seeing Martin Campbell's Lantern split from the comic book canon. In the comics, Hammond is simply a petty criminal who stumbles on a meteor that all around it with superpowers. He promptly captures some scientists and exposes them to it, and sells all their amazing inventions as his own. Eventually, he became a big-headed superbeing who could enforce his will on others. In the film, Hammond will be a doctor. He's a a brilliant pathologist but seen as an utter failure by his senator father. He discovers a meteor that grants him psychic powers. I'm sure he'll turn those powers to profit, become corrupted, and catch the all-policing eye of Hal Jordan. Then he'll become obsessed with obtaining godlike powers just to defeat Hal Jordan. You can give a man a doctorate, but you can't take away his baser motivations, can you?

Few play brainy evil as well as Sarsgaard, so I think he's a great pick. He certainly adds some dramatic weight to the movie. But it still hinges on Sinestro because whoever they cast now has to outmenace Sarsgaard.

Martin Campbell. That means it could actually be good. And yet...he's still going to be vulnerable to yellow.

This makes the third comic movie character he's portrayed.

Ryan Reynolds set for 'Green Lantern'
Actor to shine as DC Comics hero

Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of "Green Lantern," getting the starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. Production is expected to begin in January.

Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with "The Hangover" star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.

Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti.

The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy "The Proposal," which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

The actor will next star in "Buried," a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes.
