Edited my list to give The Deep Blue Sea, which to me emerges more and more on rewatches as the masterpiece of 2012 (at least 2012 US releases), its proper due.

It can truly feel like no one has ever imagined movies the way Davies does here (and in The Long Day Closes, Distant Voices Still Lives, A Quiet Passion, etc.), the way he moves back and forth through time so fluidly that past and present almost merge into one, while each flashback still illuminates each character and informs the present storyline which is ultimately a (to me) deeply moving one about someone making the choice to live. I don't really think that the people who call this a "romance" are really seeing it for what it is, because there's no possibility for real romance here: Sir William is kind and capable of providing for Hester but incapable of romance, and Freddie is all passion but emotionally abusive and an alcoholic. If anything it's the impossibility of any traditional romance, and probably the feeling that she is incapable of picking a decent partner that leads to her suicide attempt. I know Davies will never get the popular acceptance he (in my opinion) deserves, but this is such a great movie.

Very interesting. Subject matter certainly rich for cinema mining.

I haven't seen Call Girl or any of Mikael Marcimain's other films, but I understand he has directed quite a lot for television. He was also the 2nd unit director for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which was undoubtedly a valuable experience on how to recreate historical scenes for the 70s.

To put it mildly, yes. How much of the film is real, I don't know, but Swedes love conspiracy theories, especially ones involving Olof Palme, and they're still trying to solve who killed him, and why.

The film is based on the famous "Geijer Affair" of the late seventies, which was originally something like the Swedish version of the Profumo Affair. After Hopp was arrested, she claimed that the Justice Minister Lennart Geijer was one of her clients. That would not have mattered much otherwise, but under the Cold War paranoia, Swedish Secret Police instantly saw a plot where East European prostitutes were spying for the KGB, and wanted to investigate if Geijer was a "security threat". Very quickly, the matter was leaked to the press.

The issue re-surfaced about 5-10 years ago when some ex-prostitutes came forward with their version of the story. The society has changed a lot in the intervening years, and now people are much more interested in forbidden sex than they are in spy stories. It was never a secret that many of Hopp's girls were underage, but nobody really cared about it in the 70s - nowadays the attitude towards underage sex is, of course, very different. It was only at this time that the stories claiming Palme to have been one of Hopp's clients started appearing.

By the way, there is also a recent TV movie called Hinsehäxan which covers some of the same events as Call Girl.

I have to my surprise updated my 2012 choices. I thought I had pretty much done with 2012 releases though I still have yet to see Pieta.

Two weeks ago I week along to a festival screening of a Swedish film called Girl Call. It was really just a filler for me as I had never heard of the film, was it was directed by a first time director so I had no expectations.

Call Girl is based on true events from the 1970's about two young girls who are groomed into the world of prostitution and caused a great deal of controversy upon it's release in Sweden late last year. The filmmakers even ended up editing out some of the material that related to the then Prime Minster of Sweden, Olof Palme, though they were legally not required to.

Anyway, the film itself, apart from brilliantly recreating the 1970s, is a totally absorbing experience. Great soundtrack too.

The standout performance in the film was by a middle aged actress who played Dagmar Glans, based on Doris Hopp, who provided prostitutes (including under aged girls) to people in high places.

My jaw nearly dropped to the floor when the credits at the end revealed that Dagmar was played by Pernilla August.

I have always found Pernilla August one of the most dreary actresses working during the last 30 years of international cinema. I don't think her now former husband Billie August ever did her any favours with all those awful sub Bergman efforts like Best Intentions. I found all their collaborations a real effort to sit through.

In Call Girl she certainly lets loose. She makes Jackie Weaver's 'Smurf' in Animal Kingdom look like a pleasant walk in the park on a sunny mild warm afternoon and August delivers a full blooded characterisation who is completely believable as mother, protector and evil personified into one fully rounded character. She also gets to deliver some great dialogue which always helps actors along with their performances.

Dagmar as played by August is also as far as one can get from Kristin Scott Thomas' one dimensional cartoon caricature in Only God Forgives. I admire Scott Thomas but she fully deserves a Razzie for that 'effort'.

Anyway, Pernilla August is now my far and away my choice by Best Supporting Actress of 2012.

Dagmar in a moment of manipulated innocence to (either her lawyer or the police): 'But....Am I to be accused, defended, and sentenced by my own clients?' - Best line and delivery of 2012.....

I've seen it four or five times now. I think it's great. There is a small handful of moments I wish played differently like their final declarations of love and the montage-y epilogue but I think it's an inspired Hollywood production and like Moneyball it's just something I've become rather addicted to watching.

I have been less sure of who to pick for my nominees than I have been in a long time. Liked a lot of movies this year, but I didn't want to get that narrow tunnel vision when it came to my choices during awards season. So, I tried to give the films I liked or admired a good shot without being too lock-step with other groups.

BEST PICTURE

Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Moonrise Kingdom
Silver Linings Playbook

BEST DIRECTOR

Ben Affleck, Argo
Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom
Ang Lee, Life of Pi
David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln

Affleck gets his 6th nomination (if you include best pic.), and first for directing. He had 3 screenplay nods, winning for Good Will Hunting in '98, and one for acting (Hollywoodland, supp. actor, in '07). Anderson is on his first for directing. Lee won twice here: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Brokeback Mountain (2005). Spielberg won twice: Schindler's List (1993) and A.I.: Artficial Intelligence (2001). Russell takes a rare win for a "dramedy" on his first nomination.

BEST ACTOR

Jack Black, Bernie
Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook
Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
Richard Gere, Arbitrage
Denzel Washington, Flight

Black was a wonderful surprise in Bernie. Cooper was a nice surprise in his movie. Gere continues to get better with age. Washington lands back in the nominee circle. Day-Lewis nabs his second win, after There Will Be Blood (2007).

BEST ACTRESS

Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Nina Hoss, Barbara
Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
Rachel Mwanza, War Witch
Emmanuel Riva, Amour

I believe this is the most foreign-language acting nominees in one category ever for me. Chastain was nominated in support last year for her role in Take Shelter. Lawrence was nominated the previous year for her work in Winter's Bone. Everyone else is a first-timer. Lawrence wins.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook
Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln
Ezra Miller, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Bruce Willis, Moonrise Kingdom

Couldn't decide on which Django Unchained actor to place here, so they canceled each other out, though all 3 had been cited before (DiCaprio would have reached number 7 this year). Hoffman was nominated for Capote (2005) and Doubt (2008). Jones was nominated here for The Fugitive (1993) and No Country for Old Men (2007). Willis was nominated in lead for The Sixth Sense (1999). Miller is debuting. De Niro, who last appeared on Criddic's list for Casino (1995), makes his third attempt, and triumphs.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Judi Dench, Skyfall
Ann Dowd, Compliance
Sally Field, Lincoln
Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
Emma Watson, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Dench is on her 5th nomination, and won in lead for Mrs. Brown. Hathaway was up for lead in Rachel Getting Married (2008). Dowd, Field and Watson are here for the first time. Field's impressive work as Mary Todd Lincoln beats the competition.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Cabin in the Woods
Django Unchained
Looper
Moonrise Kingdom
Zero Dark Thirty

Having lost for Inglorious Basterds a few years ago, Quentin Tarantino claims the writing category.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Silver Linings Playbook

BEST ANIMATED FILM

Brave
Frankenweenie

Wreck-It-Ralph

Tim Burton wins after a narrow loss in this category 8 years ago to Hayao Miyazaki.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM
-Will be viewing others soon-

The Imposter
Side by Side

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
-Will be viewing others soon-

Amour (Austria)
Barbara (Germany)
Sister (Switzerland)
War Witch (Canada)

BEST ART DIRECTION/PRODUCTION DESIGN

This is Deakins' fourth win.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Silver Linings Playbook
Skyfall

BEST MAKEUP

This John Williams' 6th score victory, out of many nods. Danny Elfman is up for his 6th nom. Marianelli his 3rd. Danna his first. Desplat his 6th, as well.
