Brody may have been the best of the nominees the year he won but non-nominated Michael Caine in The Quiet American was better.
He wasn't better but he was nominated I think.
Not only was Caine nominated but he was also better than Brody.
I stand corrected.

It's good to see. They are the only winners who even deserved so much as a nomination.

I actually think Washington is very good. It's a great against-type performance that carries a strong piece of entertainment that unfortunately does not sustain itself. He deserved the Oscar far more than Russell Crowe that year. I actually think that more actors should win for what Washington did in Training Day AND what Crowe did in Gladiator, which is to say carry a film in a star-making/breaking performance. Then again, neither nearly deserved it as much as Bardem or Wilkinson.

BTW, love the name Aughties for the decade. Has there been a consensus as to what name we should give the decade?

This was the first time I remember really studying a list of the Best Actor winners of the last ten years. And the last two winners were my favorites. Virtual tie between Penn and Bridges.

BTW, love the name Aughties for the decade. Has there been a consensus as to what name we should give the decade?

I chose Daniel Day-Lewis, with both Sean Penn performances right behind.
