Still a little unsure about certain placements (and whether or not I want to include 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days; for the moment, no) but this is where I'm at.

I have to give Howard credit for Frost/Nixon. It could have been more heavy handed. It certainly wasn't the awful contrivance that was A Beautiful Mind, but this is his best work since Apollo 13, which was a fairly strong movie.
I wouldn't place him as one of the best directors of the year. Heck, I don't even know what I'm going to do with my director lineup when I put together my reviews for the year.

I think I've said this before, and yet it continues to confuse, Magilla. Your list reads just like a predictions list, but this is your shouldabeens (should-bes), non?
Are the shouldabeens supposed to be our personal preferences within the realm of Oscar? Or should they be one's choices for what they wish the Oscars were?
Howard and Daldry and their films? Really? I don't even know if Ron Howard's name should ever appear in a blanket search of threads like this on our board....it's almost more offensive that he's succeeded in making a film that's just so blah that no one seems to get behind and hate it out loud

I have to agree with Uri (and I loved Benjamin Button). Big Magilla, I'm a little surprised that you'd single Henson out on your own personal list. As Uri states, her performance is serviceable, meaning that it serves the purpose of the character as it's written in the script, yet does nothing to transcend it. There are tons of better female supporting performances this year (even in her same movie). Rosemarie DeWitt, Misty Upham, Elsa Zyberstein, just off the top of my head.--Uri wrote:She was fine, but merely serviceable. It's a perfect example of the tendency to confuse best supporting performance with best supporting character, so typical of this category. The list of suffering mothers and spouses roles recognized here seems to be endless. The standout supporting turn was by Swinton. A masterful performance.--Big Magilla wrote:Best Supporting Actress
