I don't always do these "oscar shouldabeens", for a couple of reasons.

What frustrates me most of all is that some years are considerably better than others, so one year I don't have any decent candidates for a shouldabeen-winner in some category, and the next year, I have an abundance of deserving people. Also, I often have the same actors and directors year in, year out, with relatively little variance. So, I prefer the "top 100 of the decade" list which I have - under progress - at the other thread.

But, in any case, here are my choices for Oscar Shouldabeens in 2008.

Picture:

Baader Meinhof Complex*
Changeling
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
Waltz with Bashir

Director:

Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Clint Eastwood, Changeling
Uli Edel, Baader Meinhof Complex*
Matteo Garrone, Gomorra
Gus Van Sant, Milk

Actor:

Moritz Bleibtrau, Baader Meinhof Complex
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Sean Penn, Milk*
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

Actress:

Martina Gedeck, Baader Meinhof Complex
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Margot at the Wedding
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road
Johanna Wokalek, Baader Meinhof Complex*

Supp. Actor:

Josh Brolin, Milk*
Ohad Knoller, Beaufort
Tuncel Kurtiz, The Edge of Heaven
Diego Luna, Milk
John Malkovich, Burn After Reading

Supp. Actress:

Ari Graynor, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Ahney Her, Gran Torino*
Nursel Köse, The Edge of Heaven
Esmeralda Ouertani, The Class
Elsa Zylberstein, I've Loved You So Long

Original Screenplay:

Fatih Akin, The Edge of Heaven
J. Michael Straczynski, Changeling*
Dustin Lance Black, Milk
Ari Folman, Waltz with Bashir
Robert D. Siegel, The Wrestler

Adapted Screenplay:

Bernd Eichinger, Baader Meinhof Complex*
Joseph Cedar & Ron Leshem, Beaufort
Stefan Ruzowitzky, The Counterfeiters
Maurizio Braucci, Ugo Chiti, Gianni Di Gregorio, Matteo Garrone, Massimo Gaudioso & Roberto Saviano, Gomorra
Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire

Cinematography:

Rainer Klausmann, Baader Meinhof Complex
Ofer Inov, Beaufort
Tom Stern, Changeling
Claudio Miranda, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button*
Anthony Dod Mantle, Slumdog Millionaire
