How about, some of us want to catch up on the nominees we haven't seen yet, and why rush selections when there are still a few days to go?
Not that the combination of a lackluster year and a seemingly foregone best picture conclusion hasn't dampened enthusiasm.

I made a list last night of my favorite Best Picture nominees this decade and I would probably include Milk on this list. This is the first time in ages where I have not seen a Best Picture nominee upon announcement of nominations but I've yet to muster the strength to endure another Stephen Daldry/David Hare collaboration. I would probably cite The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as one of the ten worst nominees of the decade but not Slumdog or Frost/Nixon.
Milk is a fairly exemplary film but this lineup is incredibly lackluster. At least 2006's lineup was gracious enough to include TWO exemplary entertainments amidst mediocrity. Nothing like last year and perhaps the two best nominees this decade coupled with a fun trifle (Juno), a fascinating and occasionally brilliant frustration (Atonement), and a hugely entertaining if shallow good time (Michael Clayton).

I can't speak for the rest of the board, but I am so indifferent about this year's nominations that I hardly even care about the race this season. Also, I've only seen one of the Best Picture nominees (Slumdog Millionaire), so I can't really say which film I think deserves to win. I'll watch the Oscar ceremony just because I watch it every year, but I don't really care what wins.

It's usually me, but this year I don't really feel like doing it. I was hoping someone else would take the initiative this year.
