81st Oscars: Supporting Actress

Well, they didn't seem to mind reusing clips we've seen a thousand times in the closing credits 2009 preview montage. Films like Terminator Salvation and others in that reel used previously-seen clips. While it was nice to see some of the films I hadn't seen before, including some new work from movies like Up, it was rather disappointing to have the lackluster trailers of some of those other films rehashed.

But, I think what might have been a coup (and I mentioned this in another thread) is to use those fancy "and the winner is" screens to show the clip of the nominated person while the individual is talking about them. And who says you have to use the same clips that were seen time and time again. I know production companies don't like to have all their movies seen, but you can pick a powerhouse scene without using the same one everyone else uses.

I thought it was a lovely way to recognize all the nominees and I appreciated the way that past winners were honored, but I really dislike clips of the nominated performances not being shown. It's sort of ridiculous.

No it's not, because the producers are then stuck with the same clip that's been shown on every other awards show.

I voted for Viola Davis thinking there's no way Penelope Cruz could join the ranks of Charlize Theron, Forest Whittaker, etc. as the acting winners for the only nomination of their movie - her performance didn't seem as destined as those two lately, and I think it will stand as a very poor choice for her to be in that company.

Part of me doesn't mind the clips not being show - especially since we've seen them so many times before. I think clips would've made it perfect, but if it was the normal way with clips or this way without, I'd rather this way without.

I don't know. I think the description of the performances by previous winners means more to the nominees and it felt right...I was expecting the 5 screens to stay down behind the presenters as they introduced the nominees.
